Hi Guys and Gals: Happy new year. Sandra, I read john's remarks in SCA about Steve having his forestay come loose in the Catalina crossing, Ouch! I also replaced the clevis pin and cotter pin on the forestay with a fastpin but instead of taping it, I tie it in place with a shoelace, several half hitches and a bow knot. Same for the fastpin on the rudder. I replaced all the cotter pins with ring pins but after that remark, I will tape them all. We live and learn. Doug, Over the Christmas holidays, I added a Richie "Tactician" surface mount compass to the hatch cover like you have. I added a small teak board to the cover to elevate the compass with two screw heads sticking out about 1/4". The compass drops down on the screws and a twist locks it in place making it easy to remove and install when raising the mast. Works great! I can see the compass heading from anywhere in the cockpit and the adjustable bezel allows you to lock in your heading (my short term memory isn't what it used to be). Running out the Dog river channel into Mobile bay last Saturday (in shorts and a tee shirt - Isn't winter hell), I hit a fog bank. I locked the heading in, ran for thirty minutes, did a reverse and hit the channel dead on (allowing 9 degrees for leeway and current). Of course, A GPS would be better, but that will come later, after my new Genny. Fair winds and an early spring to you unfortunate souls living in the upper reaches of the USA. It doesn't take much thread to hold for sheer. Pull strength is where you would be concerned with the thread. I think sheer on common 1/4" dia steel is around 1500-1800lbs. Pull tests I had done by an engineering firm for an insurance company on #12 steel sheet metal SCREWS in 20 gauge (I think it was 20) metal roof decking came out between 375-450 lbs per screw. They were 20 yrs old. ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2003 22:58:44 -0500 From: "n9ca" <n9ca@comcast.net> Subject: Re: M_Boats: 12-28 fasteners? I'd also like to say, that I have read everything you write for SCA, and love your style. You keep it interesting, and somehow light with your humour. In the most recent issue which I just received you wrote about a trip you took with another Monty owner to Catalina. This one was especially interesting in that on my most recent trip out, my shroud snapped and I did dismast. But, like Bill said, it is the little things which are important in your writing, like mentioning that normally, he did not tape the pin on the forestay. This is one of those tidbits which someone who is eager to glean information will latch on to. No one told me to tape the pin on the shrouds, but I did it anyway, just to feel a little more secure that the little pin would not slip out. But like your friend, I did not tape the pin on the forestay. However, I did change out the original clevis/cotter pin for a more user friendly quick release push pin. Now, I will tape it in when I raise the mast. I look forward to reading your book. And a happy New Year to all on the list. The shortest day of the year has past, and now as each day gets longer, we know Spring is coming! ===== Time for a cool change! Sandra(Seawitch #617) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? It also has a 2 1/2 gal spill proof which I didn't price but the 1 1/4 gal spill proof was listed for $7. They are going to check the pricing and availability for me on Monday to confirm. I did try the 1 quart oil containers but I made more of mess filling those at home and still overfilled the tank as it wasn't empty enough :( The spill proof dispenser is sounding quite attractive for a mere $7.
