Hello! A bit of controversy here regarding whether to cleat the buoy pennant to my Monty 15 or to go with a marine carabiner to the trailer eye. I chose option #1 this summer, and the then-brand new stout dock line sold to me by West Marine has abraded so much that I've had to replace it. OK to go with shackling at the eye, as opposed to cleating? Thanks in advance for sending on your experience and mooring wisdom! Steve on Whidbey Monty 15 #163 Steve Pearse sspearse@whidbey.com
Steve, I have a 17 and have only moored in a lake, but a carabiner on the trailer eye has worked nicely for me in fluky 30 knot winds with the boat dancing all over the place. I think the trailer eye is the strongest fastening point on the boat. After snapping it on, I always wrap the carabiner with a towel because it hangs limp when the wind changes suddenly. To add a point, fastening an anchor or mooring line near the water surface seems to reduce pitching in difficult conditions. Tom Jenkins M17 Scintilla On Sep 1, 2010, at 9:45 AM, steve pearse wrote:

Steve, Do you have chocks to lead the mooring line over the gunwale? Bill Wickett Makin' Time M17 On 9/1/10, steve pearse <sspearse@whidbey.com> wrote:

No, but that's an idea my buddies have suggested, Bill. My issue with that is wrestling with the chocks when I'm trying to cleat the line back on in the rolling waters we get around here. Thanks for your response…I just need to think a bit more about this. —Steve On Sep 1, 2010, at 11:16 AM, Bill Wickett wrote:
