I like the 'danger' factor - the thrill of a possible sinking every time I go out. Floatation be damned! My father-in-law had a big thing about floatation - every time a new boat with positive floatation was designed, he was all over it and ready to buy one (30' +/- range!) We were going to sail the unsinkable boat to Israel - finally gave up on the idea - never wore his PFD though - go figure. Last modification to his last boat was a bulb attached to the keel - that didn't help much either(!) - but it was HIS modification! Bless Maurice and his 'modifications' (many worked) 'Maury's Schmatta' - an interesting 'boned jib'. (didn't work so well either!) But he was ONE HELLUVA sail racer! Have Fun, Modify your boat if you want, Go Sail (it is easier and it already works fine) GO In a message dated 2/4/2016 3:53:35 P.M. The M17 at 1600 lbs displaces about 726 liters of water when floating, so to remain buoyant it would need to have at least that much volume when submerged. To make it buoyant, one would need to have total 0.726 cublic meters of submerged volume without adding much weight. So to be safe and compensate for dense gear like tools and batteries, you'd probably want about a cubic meter or about 35 cubic feet of styrofoam - nearly the total storage volume you estimated. It's doable, but would really cut into storage space. Tyler

Has anyone done the calculation for an M17? My WAG is it would take around 40 cubic feet to keep the gunwales awash. There is definitely 20 cubic feet of space under the cockpit and I'll bet you could find another 20 cubic feet under the v-berth and in the forepeak. I'm not suggesting this SHOULD be done, but I think it COULD be done.

The M17 will NOT float with just foam under vberth and cockpit floor.
The M15 WILL float with foam under the vberth and cockpit floor. Foam was standard on all Jerry built M15s.

Does that hold true, that you would have to fill the boat with flotation, for the M-15's?

The Montgomery 17s don't have flotation. With their weight you have to fill the cabin with foam in order to float the boat.

I understand the benefits of additional floatation, but El Nino is crammed packed with it and it takes up alot of room. Is it really necessary? What do you all have?
