Our aft cockpit locker, which holds the gas tank has small openings on either side wall, at the very top, aft corner. Where the side panels were not fitted up into the coaming. We get a gasoline smell in the cabin from this A project this spring is to close these openings. Does anybody else have this? Maybe someone can do a poll on this at Lake Havasu. Check out the newer and the older boats in attendance to see if the aft locker is closed up on either side. You really have to get right down and look up into the locker. Sure wish I was there. Hope it all goes well and everyone has a good time. Thanks Bill M17 #622
this gap is 'standard' on the 17s with the 'rear locker' verson of cockpit. i to plan to 'fill the gap' because of 'vapors' making their way into the cabin. dave scobie M17 #375 - SWEET PEA visit SWEET PEA www-site - http://www.m17-375.webs.com --- On Wed, 2/10/10, Bill Wickett <billwick@gmail.com> wrote: Our aft cockpit locker, which holds the gas tank has small openings on either side wall, at the very top, aft corner. Okay. I wasn't sure if it was something missed on my boat or standard build. On Wed, Feb 10, 2010 at 9:23 AM, W David Scobie <wdscobie@yahoo.com> wrote:

Hi, Bill: I had the same issue on my '83 model. To block the gap, I bought one of those brightly colored closed-cell foam "logs" sold for swimming toys, cut it to appropriate lengths and halved them, and jammed the pieces into the gaps. The fit is snug and the gas smell is gone. I think the logs I bought were about eight or so inches in diameter. I have a 2008 M17 and it has the openings that you refer to. I too would like to see if anyone has any simple remedy for this. May not be simple. Could be plywood, epoxy and lots of kneeling, or crawling aft down the q-berths. Wanna race? :) On Wed, Feb 10, 2010 at 11:03 AM, Joe Murphy <seagray@embarqmail.com> wrote:

Mr. Bob,
From a builder's perspective, any good reason not to seal off the aft cockpit locker? Any recommendations on how to accomplish this, or things not to do?

Bill, I had the same situation with my M17 "Little Breeze". I solved it by buying a large tube of silcone sealant and filling all the nooks , cranies and cracks. It sealed them up fine. Regards Arnold On Feb 10, 2010, at 5:18 AM, Bill Wickett wrote:

My 2004 has a lingering hydrocarbon smell in the cabin , but I did not know where it came from (will check tomorrow). Likely the same opening, so I too will go to my trusty tube of silicone, or open up the hole so I can run the hose from my 6 gallon Honda tank in the port locker aft to the motor. Bill: I had the same problem. I used foil-backed duct tape to plug the hole and it still seems to work after 2 years. The Havasu Pocket Cruisers bash was great! --Gary Hyde 2005 M17 #637 sailboat 'Hydeaway 2' On Feb 10, 2010, at 5:18 AM, Bill Wickett wrote:
