Tod, When I rebuilt my hatchboards on LEPPO, I made them in three pieces. After using them for the past years, I still like my three piece hatchboards. You have smaller parts to stow. I built a new lower hatchboard which has a binocular holder (doubles as the beer can holder when the binoculars are not in use); and a holder for my small Grundig radio (held in place with a small bungee cord and hook). This makes a very nice arrangement. Music and drinks readily at hand while sailing. Yes, you do have to step over it to go below; but it is - even with everything in place - not too heavy to lift out if you want easier access to the cabin. I also use the lower regular hatchboard as the base to hold my companionway table. If you just have two hatchboards, then the table will be too high for ease of use.
