first sail on a Montgomery
Hi all, We finally got our first sail on a Montgomery. We brought our new M15 home to Colorado from Arkansas about a month ago. We had “dry-fired” her in the driveway, but finally got her wet last weekend in one of the hi-country Colorado lakes (10,200’). Had an opportunity to sail in all weather conditions from calm to reefed main. We’ve been sailing for many years, but we’ re novice sailors based on hours and experience. Rigging took longer than planned. Of course we had to make every mistake possible at least once, and sometimes twice. Launching was quicker and easier than expected. Centerboards are interesting contraptions and John’s inboard electric drive (with reverse) really simplified getting off and on the trailer. Kudos to Jerry Montgomery for designing and building such a fine little boat. Very impressive, especially for a 23 year old craft. Kudos also to John Butler for the myriad of improvements and inventions he’s added to the boat. (Electric inboard, lights, heater, sound, depth, jiffy tiller holder, etc.) Winds change very quickly in the mountains and we learned just how useful a downhaul can be. We’ve not used one before. It began raining really hard just after we docked. John’s custom boom tent was effective, comfortable and really opens up the small boat. We felt spoiled. We just ordered new sails from EP Sails. Harry is great to work with. Looking forward to hauling her south when the snows come. Visit some new sailing areas. We’ve learned a great deal about Montgomery boats from this forum. Thanx for being there. SalnGail M15 – ’86 #361 “JustUs” (formerly Rejoyce) M23 - #2 (being built)
