Pound out the rotation pin port to starboard. Put the pin back in starboard to port. Be sure to support the board as you remove the pin. This will make it easier to get the pin out. :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA :: Former M15 owner On Jun 15, 2014 7:47 PM, "Tyler Backman" <casioqv@usermail.com> wrote:
I got the stuck centerboard on my M15 out with a puller (see photos) based on a design by Jim Sadler. The board was really stuck, and hammering down a rod from the top did nothing. Rusting seems to have drastically increased it's thickness. I wish I had tried this puller right from the beginning.
Now which way do I hammer out the pivot pin? Does it matter? I heard once that it's tapered on one end, but I don't know which.

There is an active M-boat community to your south, on Puget Sound. I suggest visiting the Pocket Yacht Palooza at Port Townsend on July 19 - 20. You could sail, or drive around, or take the Victoria Ferry across. There will be other M-boaters there with their boats, as well as vendors, probably including sail makers. I plan to drive, too far from the South end of Puget Sound to sail my M-15. All the 15's that I made had the same rig. i can't speak for more recent production. I've heard that masts are longer now, but I haven't measured one.

Yup. You need new sails. And sails for the M15 are quite reasonably priced. I got mine from JudyB at Hyde. She did a fantastic job. Measurements are key, as all these older M boats can have some slight differences. New sails change the boat so much you won?t believe it.
Which reminds me, Judy, I owe you some money and some sails!

Daniel, As long as you are considering new sails, look into having the main made as a loose footed one. The tack and clew will have to be reinforced more than the usual and you will need to install a bit better mechanical advantage on the outhaul fittings as you will be using it to trim the draft on the main but the boost in performance is said to be considerable. I am looking at new sails for the M17 I have and am seriously considering going the loose footed route. I have the new sails. They are loose footed, and that is the way to go. Much more control of the trim, and just looks pretty too. The Hyde sails are really well made, and have fittings on them that would work for a larger boat. Truly well done. I also have draft stripes on them to help me visualize shape.
My message was a bit confusing because what happened when I ordered my sails is that the main fit perfectly, but the jib was too big. We just messed up on the detail needed for the measurements. JudyB was terrific, and remade the jib for me. I also got a 90 and a 128 percent jib. I still have to send her back the ones that don?t fit, and I got an extra sail so I want to pay her for that.

I installed one on Sal's and Gail's m15 a couple of years ago when I built them a new standing rig. It has worked just fine.
I have also installed the mastgate on a half dozen sage 17's and all are working fine. I'm installing a mastgate on a brand new sage 17 in the next couple of weeks.
Give Tom a call, or email, and he can describe the system in detail. Very easy to install, and it works great.

Tom,
I've had one installed for a couple of seasons and it works great. The shock cord did lose some of it's zing after a while and I had to tighten it up, but it's been fine since. I was dubious myself at first, and do carry a spare bit of cord just in case, but it's held up well, and it sure beats futzing with a sail stop, and it lets me keep the sail on the boom with a cover. The buttons that cover the knots in the cord, however, don't stay on, so I just don't use them.
Good luck,
Rick M17 #633 Lynne L

Klaas, the likely cause for your clew is lower than the tack is the luff bolt rope has shrunk. original sails to a Jerry built boat ... any M15 built by Jerry ... are in need of replacement.
another sailmaker is Harry at Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers -
www.ep*sails*.com
Harry is the OEM loft for the current Mboats.
be sure to measure your boat before ordering sails ... there are variations. some of these could be caused by prior owner's. i've built new standing rigs for four M15s. two different measurements for four different boats. all boats built by Jerry.
a sail cleaning/conditioning service will not fix a blown out sail. such a service is good for cleaning a in good condition sail, say one less than 10 or so years old. no amount of conditioning can 'save' a 20+ year old sail.
order a new main with a loose foot. with improved outhaul hardware attached to the boom much MUCH more sail control.
besides a loose foot i recommend the main have two reef points. the working jib, about 128%, is a good working headsail. with a double reefed tucked in and the working jib (128%) the boat is good to a bit over 20 kts.
new sails are like 'turbo charging' your boat. she will sail faster, closer to the wind, and heel less.

Hi, I need to add another through hull fitting to my M17 for a new bilge pump hose exit. I need to drill a 1" hole for my 3/4" fitting. I have a 1" wood drill bit but I'm afraid it will not make a clean cut. I looked in Home Depot and seen a 1" bit similar to a bit that you would use to drill out a door handle but the teeth were not close together so again I think it will cause some chipping. Can anyone confirm my doubts or suggest a type of bit to use..
Thanks, Ron McNeil M17/Jackpot/#675

Daniel,
As long as you are considering new sails, look into having the
main made as a loose footed one. The tack and clew will have to
be reinforced more than the usual and you will need to install
a bit better mechanical advantage on the outhaul fittings as
you will be using it to trim the draft on the main but the
boost in performance
is
said to be considerable. I am looking at new sails for the M17
I
have
and am seriously considering going the loose footed route.
Please reply to this email as I have concerns that my missives
to
this
website are not getting through to anybody.
Thanks,
