BILL, I never thought of using the cunningham in that way but it sounds like a much easier method than trying to bend the heaviest part of the sail over a poorly angled hook while flapping in the breeze. Thanks for the tip. Jerry Williams M 15 # 516 ---- "William B. Riker" <wriker@mindspring.com> wrote:
Re: reefing hook Here's what works for me, FWIW:
I use the Cunningham. With full sail, it is a short line that runs from an eye below the gooseneck through the eye on the bottom of the gooseneck and back down to a clam cleat on the mast. When I reef, I just run it through the reefing tack and down to the clam cleat. It only takes seconds and there is no need to tie anything. And no hook to snag unwary objects.

hanging from the reefing grommet and no hooks. Unfamiliar with this system, I used the line to tie the sail down to the boom. It worked, but looked sloppy and was more difficult to tie as opposed to hook. I looked for a hook, but only found one with an eye that I figured I'd attach using a longer gooseneck bolt. The Dwyer hook looks like a better solution. For what it's worth, I use a small, spring loaded SS shackle on a short line
for our Potter. I'd tried a hook, but found it hooked things besides my reef grommet all too well, a bother considering I stored the boom in the cabin. Not as neat, but cheap and very functional.
