I once had an "L" shaped step mounted on a 22' sailboat (not a Montgomery) rudder and one on the transom. Very easy to boost yourself up on and had zero drag. They were approx 3"x 6" and made of bronze. WC used to make them and I've seen used ones on ebay. 1/4" x 2024 aluminum would probably work for the home built type. Bill P.
Bill P. I've wondered about something like that step mounted on the rudder - I was contemplating a cutout in the rudder into which I could slip my foot to give me (literally) a leg up so I could use my swing step more easily. I'm not sure the rudder pintles and gudgeons could take my 185 lbs. They hold my mast well enough in the stowed-for-travel mode but the difference in weight between the mast and my mass is substantial. However, the weight would be pretty much sheer so it might work - although with rough sea effects some nasty leveraging might occur. I think I'll give it a try with some c-clamps and a block of wood to test the capacity of the hardware. Thanks for the idea. Stan
Hello, All! I'm sending this from BuscaBrisas, sitting in the cabin while she sails herself. Of course, I'm looking about every few moments to make sure I'm not about to run into anything ;-) Talk to you later, Tod
Now that's impressive Todd. You are going to have to show me how you are doing this when we meet up. Stan
Sure will, Stan.....assuming there is reception down there. I thought it would be stronger here (Point Lookout today) than it is. My inverter (for charging the laptop) is not working right. It starts making and awful high-pitched whine and then cuts out. The computer store sold it to me. See you later, Tod
