...Not only that, but it keeps the cockpit dry. The hole that the centerboard pendant passes through at the very front of the cockpit becomes a decorative fountain while under way if there is no CB. Also: The operating length of that pendant is CRITICAL. If it's too long then the board uses its weight as a very powerful lever to break the hole that it pivots around. If I remember correctly there must be no more than four inches between fully up and fully down. Adjust the length with a stop knot.
