Motoring a Monty 15' with keel up.
If the sails are furled, would it be safe to motor with the keel up for better performance. I was thinking about fairly calm days on the ocean. Since I'm so new to sailing, I don't have a clue. Norm
Norm, yea, you can even sail with the center board up! The center board is not that heavy and adds little to the overall stability. It really helps in preventing leeway and being able to point into the wind a little closer. I had a little center board "stick" problem when I first got my boat and sailed it with the center board stuck in the trunk for a month! The shoal draft keel is where the majority of the rated ballast is located. --- nbundek <nbundek@earthlink.net> wrote:

No problem at all, Norm. I frequently raise the board when motoring to prevent it from slapping since there is no lateral load on it as there is on most points of sail. I often raise it when sailing downwind too. If the boat is rolling a lot, lowering the board can help dampen it out, but that isn't normally a problem at all. The board on a Montgomery is mostly just to help prevent the boat from slipping sideways quite so much and does very little for stability. Took Endelig (M-17 #278) out in a bit of wind and chop yesterday and found that the hole through which the centerboard winch line goes was much more active than normal. At times the water would squirt up higher then the open hatch. When the day was over, we had about a half in inch of water sloshing around the cabin floor and the bunks were wet. The winch line hole is a bit bigger than stock as each time work is done on the centerboard it tends to grow. My fix is to fiberglass the hole small again and then put up with the minimal squirting. The captain suggests that we plug the hole with something once the board is lowered. Have any of you with older M-17s dealt with this problem? Thanks, Bill Sylvester Endelig M-17 - #278
Sure you can, I motor and even sometimes sail with the c'board up. You will point higher with it down when sailing but it's not unsafe to have it up. Norm: I've motored with the board up and with it down, and can't detect a difference in performance. Sometimes I pull it up because it rattles when it is down with no side pressure. --Gary Hyde N24 'Sailabration' M15 #235 'Vanilla' On Nov 07, 2004, at 7:30 AM, Wayne Yeargain wrote:
