Hi folks, I'm buying a new Montgomery 15 and would appreciate any information you could give me on several issues. My sailing will be on wild and wooly Lake Superior (water 40 degrees F and big storms). Auxiliary motor: I'd like the quietest one; was thinking of a Mercury 3.5hp vs a Honda 2hp?; short or long shaft? Cabin heater: any experience with an Origo alcohol heater? Tender: I am a kayaker and hope to tow my kayak behind the Mont.15. Would this create too much drag? Trailer tires: the best tires for long distance trailing in winter (Jan /07 from S.Cal. to our home in Thunder Bay on Lake Superior. Overall length and width of Mont.15 on a Pacific trailer? (I'm hoping to squeeze it in between my shed and garage) I am really excited about getting one. Everything I have read and heard sounds like it is a great little boat. Josh at Small Craft Advisor was very helpful. I've made the first of three payments to Bob Eeg. I don't know if construction has started yet(no news is good news?), but my wife and I will pick it up in California at the end of Jan. 2007. I'll keep you posted as to its progress. Any advice /information you could give me would be greatly appreciated Thanks Harry Elmslie P.S I hope this acquisition will bestow some respect on me among the Thunder Bay sailing fraternity. "sea lice"? Man, you have a tough sailing crowd up there. Your kayak isn't shaped like a jet ski, is it? Harry and Nancy - Welcome, I'm in Northern Indiana. I will receive my new Montgomery 15 on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on how quickly my shipper can get it here. I plan on getting into the water even if I have to chop a hole in the ice. Several lakes near me, and about two hours from Lake Michigan where I hope to spend a lot of time next summer. I went with the Honda 2 HP, long shaft. I have no experience with it as of yet, but that was what was recommended by most of the owners, and Bob Eeg. Hi Harry and Nancy, I can only tell you my experience with the Honda 2HP long shaft on an M-15 has been very positive. Great motors, starts every time and plenty of power for the Chesapeake Bay. Although if you want to make head way in the kinda of stuff the Edmund Fitzgerald was in, I don't know. My guess would be that towing a kayak would be little drag. We have pulled along some sit on kayaks and they were not noticable. My son just finished his sailing/racing season out of Portage Lake on the other side of Superior. I know they gave already had some snow. Very pretty area. Tuff going on Superior in January though. Maybe take her for a spin in CA! Have fun, Robbin Harry & Nancy wrote:

I have a Honday 2hp long shaft and am quite happy with it. The only complaint in in a long motoring situation the internal gas tank will only last about 1.24 hrs. Refilling it is a pain. In really big waves and head winds the 3.5 would be more usefull. The M15 does not sail as well with a lot of weight aft. In general I would stay with the 2 hp range or a 2 cycle in a higher hp as long as it was light. Cabin heater: any > experience with an Origo alcohol heater? I thought any form of flaming heater sucked up oxegen and left CO2 - not a good idea. I overnighted last weekend and had frost on the cockpit cushions in the AM. I slept very well with a flannel sleeping bag inside of a summer weight bag with the hatch boards out but the cabin hatch closed. The only time I closed up the hatches and slept in below freezing temps the boat collected frost on the ceiling and it started melting into my face in the AM. > Tender: I am a kayaker and hope to tow my kayak > behind the Mont.15. Would this create too much > drag? I towed an 85lb Bolger light dory on several trips including 2 weeks in Maine. In light airs the drag from any towed device is deadly. In larger waves the dory would serf faster than I could sail and rammed my transom a couple of times. I let out more line and it almost broached. Too much worry. I bought one of the Stearns inflateable kayacks after a posting from CA on the list. It works great and paddles far better than I ever would have thought. A good foot pump has it ready to go in about 5 minutes. Mine is an older version 10 footer at 35 lbs. The new ones are 8 footers at 28 lbs. A nice package. Length - boat and trailer fits nicely into a standard gararge (20 ft long) without the mast - 22'. It will make them jealous as you pass them and make them envious as remove your disguise, convert to sea lice and paddle past them and around the harbor. Hi Nancy (or Harry). We just sold our M15, Chukar, to a woman who is sailing Superior. I'll check on where she's located. Hi guys. I'm going to buy a Honda 2 for my M17, but before going to my nearest Honda dealer, I though I'd see if anyone on the list has one for sale. Thanks. t Tom Smith & Jane Van Winkle M17 #496 -- dharma bum
Harry, Once upon a time I was worried about my M-15 with a short shaft Honda 2, and whether it had the right stuff. Got to test it coming out of the canal that runs north behind Janes Island from Crisfield, MD. It was blowing hard from the west, so the fetch was several miles across the bay. Waves at least 4-5'. We needed to get out into Tangier Sound, clear of the lee shore to raise sail. At that time, I didn't have an adjustable motor mount, even. But I was quite surprised, and pleased, with how well that little motor pushed the 15 over those big waves and into the wind. It wasn't fast, but it did the job, no sweat. Wouldn't you know it, but the time we got to Smith Island, all sail was up and the motor was on again. The wind had completely died. The short shaft motor is fine if you have an adjustable mount, and I think Bob is putting adjustables on all new boats now.
