Hello Everybody, There has been some virus activity lately and it has prompted me to pass along a trick that I picked up somewhere. This won't stop you from getting a virus but it will help detect them and prevent you from unwittingly spreading them. Simply open your address book and create a new contact, name it !0000 ,give it no email address, then click ok. That's it! When the next nasty virus tries to send itself to everybody in your address book up pops an error message that says the message can't be sent because one or more recipients don't have a valid email address. You will be aware of the problem and nobody else will be infected. Simple and effective ( at least until some 10 year old figures out a way to get around it )! The days are getting longer. Get those projects completed. We'll be sailing again soon!!! Yippee! Mark Dvorscak
When ever something sounds too good to be true, check it out at urbanlegends.com, mcafee.com, or symantec.com. The following is from Mcafee.com regarding the !0000 "virus prevention" hoax: The !0000 Hoax is mainly circulating in the Netherlands. The e-mail content contains a "trick" how to prevent/stop mass-mailing routines used by e-mail viruses/worms. Basically the idea mentioned is to use a dummy !0000 e-mail contact address, so without an actual associated e-mail address, which would fail when accessed by a mass-mailer, thus giving the user the option to stop/block the mass-mailing. Now the trick might work for a few viruses, it won't stop the majority of the mass-mailers. Please don't rely on this "trick", in most cases it won't work, don't forward the e-mail message on to other people- delete it. Installing the Microsoft patches has better results. Your best defense for against viruses is to be extremely careful about which emails you open, particularly if they contain attachments. Additionally a good antivirus software with virus definition updates performed weekly is a necessitiy. Fair winds...
