I am interested in a recommendation for a depth finder for a Montgomery 15. Valerie Gates
first recommendation is handheld. example is the HawkEye H22PX. about $100. if you wish to do a fixed install, and have an electrical system, get a depth sounder that uses an in-hull trasnducer. HawkEye D10D is a nice unit. follow the instructions on how to in-hull mount. not difficult, but it may require a few 'test installs'. (you may find a few Uniden QT-206 units around, make sure you get one with an in-hull transducer. The QT-206 has been discontinued so what you find is 'all that is left' in the marketplace.) again, my first recommendation is a handheld. :: Dave Scobie :: Sage Marine --- On Tue, 12/20/11, V Gates <fairoaksca8139@gmail.com> wrote:

Thank you Dave. I bought the HawkEye D10D for my husband's birthday not realizing we have to have a battery, which we don't. I will order the HawkEye HP22PX. BTW, he was very impressed with my choice of present. This list has afforded me to be very creative! Valerie On Tue, Dec 20, 2011 at 8:17 AM, W David Scobie <wdscobie@yahoo.com> wrote:

I spoke to Patrick at the HawkEye dealer and he recommended the D10D with a sealed gel battery. Does anyone have experience with that set up. We trailer our boat home each time we sail so we can charge the battery at home. Thank you, Valerie On Wed, Dec 21, 2011 at 8:42 AM, V Gates <fairoaksca8139@gmail.com> wrote:

a group 24 battery will fit under the M15's v-berth (requires un-screwing the locker lid). you can use a smaller 12V battery. the battery needs to be contained in a marine box and secured for safety to contain leaks (batteries do crack or other such damage) and keep the battery from moving around. you then need to think about an electrical system install. i have details installing an M15 electrical system ... just haven't finished writing the details (i installed an electrical system on my M15). my experience is the cost for a safe and sturdy electrical system is about $1000 (retail cost for parts, owner does the install), not including the depth sounder. i'll share details on my install shortly ... i'll post that i have it available on this listproc and on trailersailor.com montgomery forum. i still recommend the handheld depth sounder. :: Dave Scobie :: forumer M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: Sage Marine --- On Wed, 12/21/11, V Gates <fairoaksca8139@gmail.com> wrote:

look at what i stated i need to clarify my 'cost to install' numbers - should have stated $500 for a basic battery install (panel, wires, connectors, fuses, etc). my $1000 is the cost i experienced because of cabin lights, running lights, and other 'bells and whistles' not necessary if one just wants to power a depth sounder. :: Dave Scobie :: Sage Marine --- On Wed, 12/21/11, W David Scobie <wdscobie@yahoo.com> wrote:

The battery was installed in the aft end of the port berth storage space in a battery box I built. A small electrical distribution panel was mounted on the cabin wall close to the companionway that had a cigarette lighter socket on the front face where I could plug in my units. I ran my wiring through PVC pipe which I heated and bent to the curve of he hull, and then held it in place with a few pieces of fiberglass tape epoxied to the hull. I had no running lights or other electrical items that needed larger amounts of power, so my installation was just a replacement for multi-AA batteries. Connie ex M15 #400 LEPPO
