Montgomery 15 self bailing/capsize
Guys--what I wanted to know is does the cockpit drain on the Montgomery 15 work as an effective self bailer after capsize? Tom Harris (tom@westtexasswimcoaching.com) Sent from my iPhone
Tom, Once I left my Montgomery 15 parked, uncovered, under some trees. The cockpit drain plugged up solid with leaves, and the cockpit filled up with rainwater to just below the hatch boards, with the boat tilted bow down The water was also below the seat hatches, so no water actually got inside the boat. When I cleared the leaves, it took about 5 minutes for the cockpit to drain completely. That might give you some idea about how long it might take to drain after filling the cockpit. On the water, it might take a little longer, since the boat would be sitting lower in the water, and might drain a little slower. Yeah, that cockpit drain in the cabin sole is really for nuisance water drainage. If you are taking waves over the gunwales that floor drain will NOT keep up. That is why I added the two 1 1/2 inch straight thru cockpit drains to my boat. I was going to go two inch but decided if I am the least bit careful I shouldn't need anything more than I now have. That happened to me too, the flooded cockpit due to leaves. The weight of water in a cockpit can build up very fast. If the boat is balanced closely on the trailer axle it could actually tip backwards with quite a bit of force, damaging the skeg and anything else near the boat since the trailer tongue will be propelled into the air quickly. I shortened the factory installed hose by about three feet under the cockpit sole so now it is easier to clean out with a hose or really, a bent coat hanger. Best to keep the "detritus" out of the boat though.😉 On Wed, Feb 1, 2017 at 10:45 PM, Bill Day <bill@gotrain.org> wrote:
