Hi Brad (and all,) I’m curious about your comments regarding comparing Scamp accommodations to the M-15. Speaking with some experience after doing the Salish 100, the M-15 cabin sucks(!) for anything but actually sleeping. Without sitting headroom it’s functionally useless until it’s time for bed. By comparison, all the Scamps on the cruise had cockpit covers giving them a huge area to hang out in, completely protected from the weather. Granted, it took a while for them to set up the cover, (and it looked like a pain to do), but it looked really cozy and snug once they were up. We had fantastic weather on the cruise so they weren’t setting up in a wet cockpit though, so that is certainly a consideration. But I think each boat has its compromises and advantages. I almost always day sail, and may only cruise once a year, so I’ve been thinking about downsizing to a Scamp, but I haven’t decided yet. It is a compelling design, but I just don’t know yet if I want to accept its compromises over my M-15 or not. Time will tell! Maybe I’ll have both for a season and decide then. Dr Dan, I have seen, I believe, all your videos. Some, several times. They played a big part in my decision to buy and own an M15 3 yrs ago. I think your melancholy is a sign your mind is giving you that you're going down the wrong path here. For the single hander, the Monty has considerable cabin space. Relatively speaking, it's a big, heavy, safe boat. 250 lb keel. No offense against the venerable Scamp, but they're just two different boats. The cabin of what thereof is it, is not fully enclosed. You're open out to the elements. Your privacy is limited. You can't play "big cruising sailboat" like you can with the Monty 15. With the Monty, in a quiet anchorage, you can drop the anchor, close yourself up snug in the cabin, and feel pretty safe. A weatherproof cabin when out cruising is a godsend. I would think while cruising in the Scamp, you're going to miss having a weatherproof cabin.
That said, any boat you make, you're going to love. They're like your own kids. I should know: I've built 3 sailboats and 3 canoes. Love them all. You're owning now your own hand made wooden boat is going to be great. Does it mean it will replace the many capabilities of the Monty 15? In this case, I'm not seeing it. I think, yes, you'll love your Scamp, like nothing else, but you'll miss your M15, too, and will wonder just what were you thinking when you gave it up. Just my thoughts. Good luck.

With sad heart I think I have to sell Kestrel, my trusty M15. I have a SCAMP near completion in my garage, and I just don't have the time or space for two boats. I took Kestrel out yesterday for another voyage in my favorite sailing spot, Tomales Bay, CA.
Those of you on this board for a long time know this boat through my blog and videos. I am the third owner of this 1982 Jerry Montgomery built craft. She is a terrific boat. Very sea worthy. Over the years I have set the boat up to sail the way I want. I added a topping lift and boom vang. I have fairleads over the cam cleats for the jib sheets for single handing. I have reefing set up with a tack hook, rings on the sail, and jiffy lines in the main. Capture shackles for easy setting of the halyards. Lots of little things like that. In short, she sails well. I have crisp Hyde Sails from JudyB with not much time on them. Full 110 jib and 90 jib as well as the main. Excellent beefy Pacific trailer with trailer extension. The trailer weighs 700 lbs itself!
Lots of videos about this boat on my channel at
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmcGEC4oxIDuxI076ElvafQ?view_as=subscriber
I also have a blog with lots of posts years past about the boat.

Yesterday's sail was very melancholy, thinking that it could be the last with Kestrel. Also, used to sail with my dog Flash on the boat, but he left earth for dog heaven in 2017. But, times change, and given my full time career and new boat in the boat shop at home, she's gotta go. I'm hoping she goes to a good home.
The boat is very seaworthy, but could use some cosmetics. The hull gelcoat is dull and chalky, and could use a nice buffing. The teak is old, and despite sanding and teak oil, is cosmetically so-so. Good on the hands though. The rudder could use a sanding but works great. Centerboard is working perfectly. Looks like somebody worked on the pin 20 years ago. Might wanna put a little putty over the pin.
For a 1982 she works great.
Lemme know if anybody wants this boat. Otherwise, off to craigslist!
I am located in Sonoma County, Sebastopol, CA.

Well you are very kind. Thanks for the words on the videos! That is one reason I do them. When I am researching something, I often find there is not much good information with real video out there. I found that to be the case with the M15, and recently with my new recumbent bicycle.
I have so many wonderful memories on my M15. But I am not a cruiser at this point, simply a day sailor. Once the M15 is in the water, she sails like a BMW as you know. Mine is so nicely tuned at this point. But she is a bit of a handful to deal with in the driveway and when rigging. 1600 pounds with the trailer. I am really a day sailor, so I think the SCAMP will serve me well there. The M15 is great in a blow, and I think the SCAMP will weather it pretty well too. I just don?t have good space to keep her alas.
So, I will definitely grieve when she is gone?

Hi Rusty, Rig yourself a boom tent / Bimini on your M15. Then you have a cockpit for sitting, reading, cooking, and lounging; and a nice double bed for sleeping. Connie ex M15 #400 LEPPO On 8/18/2019 1:28 PM, Rusty Knorr via montgomery_boats wrote:

For my Monty 17 I fashioned three panels out of 3/8 plywood that were small enough to slide under the v-berth yet could be used to bridge the opening in my cockpit providing a full size platform for sleeping bags and air mattresses for my wife and myself. We sleep under the stars or can quickly slip below should the weather change. <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=icon> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=link> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Sun, Aug 18, 2019 at 2:25 PM Conbert Benneck <chbenneck@gmail.com> wrote:

I’m curious about your comments regarding comparing Scamp accommodations to the M-15.

Rusty, You are right about the basics of the M15 cabin but if you use the same amount of canvas to enclose the M15 cockpit as is used in the Scamp you would also like the large enclosed space. The Sage 15 or Sage Cat is a major cruising improvement. I actively cruised an M15 for 19 years on both coasts and rarely just went for a day sail. Slept on board 40 nights a year and did 10 day trips without stopping at any marinas. Some simple additions and attitude changes make life quite enjoyable. The most common working arrangement evolved to only travelling with two small duffles for personal items which can be accessed via the "standard" sitting position over the porta pottly storage area facing aft. Keep the hatch open, put up a small 6 ft x 9 ft fly over the hatch area to keep sprinkles and showers out. You can put the kitchen out on the seats with the stove on the floor and cook a nice meal. Clean up, open the evening libation and enjoy the scenery and activities leaning against the cabin. If no rain threatens for a while when you get anchored, clear the mainsheet from all blocks and swing the boom off to the side and tie it off to the shroud. Easy access into and out of the cabin. Swing the boom back to center for the night, put up the short fly or longer boom tent for the night, keeping the boom high using the topping lift and the halyard. I spent a very enjoyable two week cruise in the San Juan and Gulf Islands with the usual mix of good and bad weather. I was quite comfortable. I currently camp cruise in a 17 ft NEaster Dory and have come to appreciate a fixed enclosed cabin even more. I do like the Scamp but on a comfort level both boats can be quite comfortable and if you spend the time and money on a canvass cabin they are both excellent cruisers. For me the effort of putting up the cabin was not worth the effort. You can almost get a waterproof cabin with a simple 9 x 8 nylon fly, raising the boom at the mast with the halyard, leveling the boom with the topping lift and getting the mainsheet out of the way. I am really a day sailor, so I think the SCAMP will serve me well there. The M15 is great in a blow, and I think the SCAMP will weather it pretty well too. I just don?t have good space to keep her alas.
So, I will definitely grieve when she is gone?

I also have a blog with lots of posts years past about the boat.

Yesterday's sail was very melancholy, thinking that it could be the last with Kestrel. Also, used to sail with my dog Flash on the boat, but he
left
earth for dog heaven in 2017.

I solved the problem of ventilation in my M-15 by adding an opening port with a screen at the front of the cabin, and I also being able to look out to the front when I am in the cabin, providing I remember to get the jib out of the way. I’m curious about your comments regarding comparing Scamp accommodations to the M-15.

Well you are very kind. Thanks for the words on the videos! That is one reason I do them. When I am researching something, I often find there is not much good information with real video out there. I found that to be the case with the M15, and recently with my new recumbent bicycle.

If you are thinking of all the work for setting up a tent on a scamp, how about a soft dodger (collapsible) on your M-15? Quick up and down, sitting headroom underneath is in the main cabin with an easily removable seat hung on the passageway sill and once the dodger is up you have contact points for a cockpit tent extended to your aft pulpit. Add side curtains that twist snap into place for your one night stand. All you are doing here is re-configuring the available space just like you would have to do with a Scamp but without having to sell what you have and buy a Scamp. <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=icon> Virus-free. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail&utm_term=link> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Sun, Aug 18, 2019 at 2:43 PM Steve Trapp <stevetrapp@q.com> wrote:

I have a SCAMP near completion in my garage, and I just don't have the time or space
for
two boats.

I also have a blog with lots of posts years past about the boat.

Yesterday's sail was very melancholy, thinking that it could be the last with Kestrel. Also, used to sail with my dog Flash on the boat, but he
left
earth for dog heaven in 2017.

I'd like to see a good design for a dodger/awning/vestibule companionway cover combo for the m15. I'd like something that not very big so it could be scamp-like but not rigid or permanent. Might make the best of both worlds On Sunday, August 18, 2019, 4:40:49 PM PDT, Thomas Buzzi <thomaspbuzzi@gmail.com> wrote: If you are thinking of all the work for setting up a tent on a scamp, how about a soft dodger (collapsible) on your M-15?

Rusty,
You are right about the basics of the M15 cabin but if you use the same amount of canvas to enclose the M15 cockpit as is used in the Scamp you would also like the large enclosed space.
Thanks
Doug Kelch

Hi Brad (and all,)
I’m curious about your comments regarding comparing Scamp accommodations to the M-15.

Yesterday's sail was very melancholy, thinking that it could be the last with Kestrel. Also, used to sail with my dog Flash on the boat, but he
left
earth for dog heaven in 2017.

I am thinking about having one of these mainsail cover boom tents made for my M15: https://www.sailrite.com/How-to-Make-a-Mainsail-Cover-Boom-Tent Basically you first make a regular mainsail cover, and then make rectangular sides that attach to the twist fasteners on the cover. Add side curtains that twist snap into place for your one night stand. Rusty,
You are right about the basics of the M15 cabin but if you use the same amount of canvas to enclose the M15 cockpit as is used in the Scamp you would also like the large enclosed space.
Thanks

Hi Brad (and all,)
I’m curious about your comments regarding comparing Scamp accommodations to the M-15.

Good luck.
