While what each sailor and location sailed in will dictate their outboard motor preference, I absolutely love my Yamaha 8 hp electric start 4 stroke. This motor came new with my #32 M17 s/v cerulea when I bought her in Port Townsend in 2008. The previous owner replaced the 6hp he had with this motor. Currents be it ocean, river, or long large mountain lake do not tax forward progress in the M17. BTW mine is mounted in the transom cut out with no issues.
I did have to reinforce Busca's transom a fair amount, but my Yamaha 50 HT works great! It is a little overkill, since at about 3/4 throttle the bow wave starts breaking over the cockpit coamings, but all the same I can cruise at 12.4 kts at just under 3/4 throttle. The couple times I've tried full throttle (had to put the hatchboards in!) she hit 15 kts before I chickened out and backed off, afraid I might get water below once the cockpit started to fill. (cockpit drains not quite big enough!) Haven't tried waterskiing yet. Anyone know how fast you have to go to do that? Tod Mills M17 #408, 1987 galley model BuscaBrisas
