Idasailor rudder and some improvements
This next M_17 going to Utah has the newer Idasailor Rudder. I like how it folds; and it looks stout enough. It arrived yesterday and fit like a glove. Anyone have experience (positive and negative) on the durability and ease of folding this rudder? The blade appears to sit deeper when folded down; and she has a line pull to raise her. Some changes: We're going to all rope halyards with a larger shackle for the main and jib. The M_17 Strawanza, now 'out there somewhere' was all rope and I liked the way we could run lines aft for singlehanding. Also, on the new M_15s were going with a turnbuckle on the forestay. This makes it easier to set the side shrouds only once, and tension the headstay nice and tight. We have done this on several of the 15s and now think the extra cost is worth it. Fair winds......Bob Boat Builder

Just a question.. This weekend I was looking at a parked Catalina 22 on a trailer and I saw its rudder and I thought mmmmm I wonder if this would fit my M-17 w the broken rudder. The pintles were not adjustable but I probably could adjust the gudgeons on the boat, it was a nice kick up design and it looked like it would work w/o major mods. Anybody gone down this road? Great Price! I just spent over $400 last year for a stock rudder/tiller. I know the Idasailor expands our options but i just love the look of that varnished mahogony rudder. It is important that i remember to raise it at the dock... i don't have the feature that raises the rudder on my craft... must have broken in previous ownership. I have to raise it by hand. I have forgotten a couple times and have pulled out at the ramp and scraped on pavement for yards. Kind of makes you sick to your stomach. Haven't blown this with the new one yet. jeff M17 #336 Gary M Hyde <gmhyde1@mac.com> wrote: Gilbert: I just upgraded to the latest Idasailor kickup rudder. Gilbert, I have a really good design for a kickup on my 17 and the guy that makes them is VERY reasonable, top quality construction, and a lot less than Idasailor and work just as well.....if interested, let me know and I can send pics of it and his address. I ordered a new M17 from Bob Eeg of Montgomery Boats on November 5, 2007. Yesterday on the day after Christmas I picked up DINGO almost a full month ahead of schedule. Bob built a beautiful boat and accommodated all of my special requests. Thanks Bob! I am looking forward to sailing DINGO on Lake Mead and offshore in Southern California. Steven Turk M17 DINGO

Thanks Tom, Bob delivered a number of boats in the last few weeks. I'm certainly glad to have mine. My wife and I will be joining Sean and the armada in Havasu. We can't wait to meet some other Montgomery\Trailer sailors. The maiden voyage will be out of Echo Bay in Lake Mead hopefully sometime soon... Steven, Echo Bay is nicely located with a good physical setup, so I suspect you will have a ball. I am a little partial to the scenery at Temple Bar, and there are not so many ski-boats, but the new block-long launching ramp is close to drying out with current low lake level. Pray for a good water year in the basin! By the way, your boat name is great on several levels. Do you have one of those canines for a mascot? For what it is worth regarding Havasu, I have recently sailed out of Cattail Cove with its nice campground and launching ramp (you can rent a slip at Sandpoint Marina next door), and have boated from both Nautical Inn and Havasu Springs. The Nautical is great if you can beach your boat, since you can usually reach in and out of the little bay below your room. It's a fun sail under the London Bridge and around the "island". Havasu Springs has nice slips and more peace and quiet, so I have to say I like both. Guess the choice depends on how the sailboat "swarm" is organized. Surely anyone driving down there will stay at least a week, and can try out all three places.
