How much I can expect to negotiate the price for a new M17
Hello all. This is my first posting as an MSOG member. I’ve been mostly lake sailing for the past 5 years on my Columbia 23, which I recently sold. It was a beautiful boat but I wanted to down size and get something newer. After researching every boat I could think of I really think the M17 is the boat for me. But I haven’t seen any for sale in my area of Phoenix, or within 300 miles for that matter. So I am now considering purchasing a new one, which leads me to my first question. Does anyone know how much I should expect to pay for a new boat? I know the approximate list price but I don’t know how much I can expect to negotiate the price. Thanks, Ron
Hi Ron....we've been emailing for a few months about the M_17. You know of course that we are on this forum. The price with sails, main with 2 reefs, working jib, bow pulpit, teak trim, 8 feet of genoa track each side with cars, fabric interior cushions, topping lift, telescoping rudder, stainless folding boarding ladder, stainless adjustable motor mount..etc. The price is $18,390 for a 2013 model. The trailer is extra. Since we build factory direct with no dealer cushion, that price is firm. Be well Bob (949) 489-8227

No disrespect to Bob, but sooner or later, a patient fellow will find a used M17 in damn good shape for much less than the price of a new boat. Guaranteed. You may have to travel a bit, but a road trip is nearly always a good time. But then again, if you have the cash, go for the new boat... t
One of the oldest, and still one of the best, Internet resources on M-Boats is the MSOG. I see people are still using the classifieds: http://msog.org/cfmods/M-boats4sail.cfm On Aug 25, 2012, at 11:51 PM, Tom Smith wrote:

I have also been in a futile search for a used M17. I search the MSOG classified relentlessly. However, I'm sure others feel the same frustration that most of the ads are out of date; boats sold long ago. Is it possible to identify and delete boats that have been sold. I would be happy to forward those that have responded that their boat is sold, or no longer for sale to the Monty list. There are many good sources for used sailboats outside the MSOG. One of my favorites is Sailing Texas. Since they list a history of boats that have sold for years it also gives you a good idea of what you can expect to pay based on age and options. I have also had good luck with Craigslist. In my experience there are other trades than just money for buying new versus used. If you buy new you are going to have many years before your boat or trailer needs major maintenance/repairs. As all us good old boat owners know that is not the case with older used boats. Good luck! Robbin On 8/26/2012 9:30 PM, Michael Garcia wrote:

I bought this boat 10 years ago, kept it up and .... well check out the pictures. I kept in my backyard (yes, I am lucky). Currently she is on a rebuilt galvanized trailer, the centerboard is out and half way epoxy finished. She developed blisters looks like a case of the chicken pox, I have sanded the gelcoat below the waterline 90%, as much as I can reach on the trailer. I was planning on using some intercoat epoxy to seal then bottompaint. But it is currently 105 degrees in the shade and am saving this for a fall/winter project. I will sell her as/is for $4,000 firm if any one is interested I am in Corpus Christi, Texas. Well there you go gentlemen. An M17 that you can call your own for 4k. Yes, you'll have to do some work. And you'll probably have to do a little traveling. But if you buy, you'll get to know your boat, and if you travel, you'll get to know this beautiful country... t
