Re: M_Boats: shallow-draft sailing dinghy-WB8
A Walker Bay 8 was our first sailboat. They're quite decent little boats. They row well. A two horse outboard is way too much, but an electric trolling motor is excellent. They're fun and stable sailors; I think I could make 5 knots reliably with 15 knots of wind. The biggest weakness to sailing performance was the very high aspect daggerboard. It was narrow in order to fit through the middle seat. She went to windward quite respectably unless you were in light air, whereupon she would stall easily due to the narrow board, making lots of leeway. A nice feature of the boat was the sump that the skeg formed within the boat. Sailors are compelled to sit in the bilge between the middle and back seats. The sump kept this area dry. It sails two, max, but it's better with one, or one adult and a very small child.
