Hi Lou, I have a 1976 model M17.Before Idasailor came along, I had a carpenter friend fabricate a kick up rudder for my boat mimicking the original design using white oak. It hinges in the middle between stainless steel cheek plates. It does not have the performance of the stock rudder, and is almost twice the weight. However, it is very robust and does its job when you run into a rock or skinny water.I wrote an article about it with pictures that Theo posted in one of the last issues of the Montgomery newsletter.
