Sailboat show and other thoughts
We'll September has been a pretty bad month for sailing here on the Chesapeake bay. Aside from 3 days of sailing the Monty 15 on the Miles River during our vacation we have not gotten out much. What our half dozen outings has shown us are a bunch of improvements we needed to make to Monty #616 model 15 . Trailer Guides were installed and these help us line up the boat on the trailer when retrieving and to me is a MUST have accessory. Tiller extension by ForeSpar. I bought an Ida Sailor tiller and rudder assembly and the tiller was a tad shorter that the OEM tiller it replaced and the extension really allows me to move my weight forward and stand and steer too. A welcome addition and less strain on my shoulder from having to reach so far back. I'd like suggestions on cock pit cushions before I go to the boat show in Annapolis MD for those of you that have bought and installed cushions. We currently sit on our throwable. Replaced the tack of the jib with an "S" bend hook looped into the fitting on the bow. This works great and limits our time setting up the jib and worrying about losing a pin for the clamp which we have already done. Removed the green boot stripe around the hull, hated Green as a color and I like the white hull much better but this required lots off Goof Off adhesive remover but a better looking hull with Red lettering on hull and sails now. Increased the down haul purchase on the main to 3:1 and the out haul on the main to 4:1 and I can get really nice shapes from my Hyde main sail now and this makes downwind adjustments a breeze. Well I thought I share some of these minor yet important changes I have made and now I must resist the temptations of the Annapolis Boat Show next weekend. Going to finally meet Stan, Gail and Dave Scobie at the Sage booth and check out the Sage and hopefully Dave will let us rig and demo sail her after the show. This weekend's forecast is small craft advisories for the whole weekend so it's great that the show is next weekend. Any Monty Folks going to the show, My pal Gary and I will be there on VIP Thursday early AM to get a jump on the crowds. See you there or if you care to meet contact me offline. Hi Smiley and Karen, I will second that on rotten weekends. I went out to the marina yesterday afternoon and caught some rare nice weather. I have had a bimini made by Lisa at http://www.mechanicadvisor.com/md/chesapeake-beach/lisas-custom-canvas.aspx and the folks I have talked to say she is very reasonable. We have vinyl cockpit cushions that must be replaced and I will have her work on this. Thanks for sharing your upgrades! I will be at the boat show probably Sat or Sun with my wife (jewelery, sail bag totes are her thing along with the big cats (we like to dream)) and I will come by the Sage as well. My M-17 loaded on the trailer weighs around 2600 lb. I've towed it over 4,000 miles in the last two years with a Honda Pilot and no trailer brakes. If towing with a very light vehicle, or if you tend to tailgate; then trailer brakes might be a good idea. Thanks for the reply. I tow my M17 with a Dokota PU and although I haven't taken it for any major distance other than from the boat yard to the ramp I can hardly tell it's back there. Just was curious if I plan any long distance hauls.... like Havasu.... Mark, Interesting. My 17 without the motor and cruising stores weighs almost exactly 3000 pounds. I suppose the new disc brakes and controller added another 50. The electrical system and furling gear contribute quite a few pounds, but my four massive bronze opening portlights might make most of the difference. Take your rig to a truck scale - like a farmer's coop or other bulk handling outfit. Only costs a couple of bucks and you'll know what your trailer weighs for sure.
