Re: M_Boats: My Superior Trip
Chad, I forgot about that. That is the other reason I switched to a propane stove. My late fall cruises often get below freezing at night and the butane stoves don't work well as the temps approach 34 deg. I usually make an omlette with dice mushrooms, onions and peppers in the AM and the Jetboil doesn't work for this style of cooking either. The fresh mushrooms and peppers will keep for up to two weeks in the cool air of Lake Superior, especially if they have never been refrigerated. Chris,
Get yourself a Jetboil stove system. It is fabulous. The main unit is a small gas canister, stove with ignitor, cup with heatsink, and a french press. It all fit together in a small package. Add the larger cooking pot (with heat deflector) and you have the bases covered for hot drinks, coffee, and a one pot meal. I've looking for a system like this for motorcycle camping for years. Now having my Jetboil for three seasons, I can't say enough good things about it. My system is going with me to Isle Royale this weekend..... I talked to a fellow at Midwest Mountaineering just after I purchased my set-up, he was an avid camper and scrapped this THREE stoves he owned to go with the Jetboil. And, an added point, it heats up fast!
For what it's worth.
Have a fine sail in the Apostles, monitor the weather.......

Hey Doug, The jetboil actually works fantastically well for cooking omelettes, although it does require the larger cooking pan vs the standard cooking "cup" Here is what you do: 1. Crack 2 eggs into a freezer ziplock bag and seal it 2. Scrunch the eggs up in the bag so they are scrambled. 3. Open the bag and add shredded cheese, ham, peppers mushrooms etc. seal the bag again. 4. Bring water to boil and add the bag. 5. Boil for 13 minutes. 6. Eat. This is a nice way to make breakfast as cleanup is really easy and it can be prepared beforehand and just left in the bag in your cooler. Next time you want to make an omelette without a frying pan you can put your eggs with your diced mushrooms, onions and peppers in a zip lock bag (use the freezer type) and mash it all up; put it in boiling water to cook. It doesn't have that nice fried-around the edges look and texture but while you are boiling the water put a soft flour taco shell between two pieces of paper towel and lay it across the pot and hold it suspended with the pot top to steam warm the tortilla. I mix an egg; grated monterey jack; a packet of medium hot Taco Bueno sauce and some chopped jalapenas in a zip lock bag when I want to have a no mess no fuss juevos rancheros.
