OK, I have enjoyed this discussion regarding the mast rake. I have looked at the photo site, and some of the boats have the shrouds connected to the forward hole on the deck plate, and some have the shrouds connected to the aft hole. So, which is it??? Daniel

Middle? No, I'm talking about the shrouds. The forestay on the M15 goes in the middle hole of the bow plate like you say. Daniel On Apr 6, 2011, at 9:24 PM, Neil Dorf wrote:

According to Jerry's rigging instructions, it is supposed to go in the forward hole, not the rear hole. That will make your forestay seem even longer! Daniel On Apr 6, 2011, at 9:45 PM, Neil Dorf wrote:

OK, according to Jerry Montgomery himself, the shroud is supposed to go to the forward hole. OK. That is where I put it. Daniel On Apr 7, 2011, at 4:31 AM, John Tyner wrote:

The aft holes are for a lifting sling and for a preventer vang. This advice is only for the boats I built, which have a backup under the chainplates. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Tyner" <tynerjr@md.metrocast.net> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, April 07, 2011 4:31 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: standing rigging

Mboaters: i believe my 15's mast raked aft about 6"(?). maybe jerry will comment on what he believes is the best setting. yeah ... people are all over the place on where they attach the stays. my 15 the stays were attached in the forward hole. but ... i saw some attached in the aft hole. you can see this difference in attachment in the picture linked below. my 15 is in the background (mast up). http://www.nwpotters.org/2007trips/CaseInlet/gallery/David%20Scobie/slides/t... :: dave scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 - SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage Marine - www.sagemarine.us

Older owners frequently talk about lifting by the chainplates but I agree with the comment after not using the chain plates for lifting M 15s that way unless they are older models. On several older M 15's that I've checked, the chain plates were backed with either a solid aluminam rod or a hollow pipe. I've looked at ones made it 2006 and 2008 and noticed that the chain plates are backed only a small washer. In fact on one boat, the plastic cleats on the stern were backed by a larger washer. If you have a newer boat use lifting slings. I use a vehicle towing strap around the bow and a large dock line around the stern. On 4/7/11, jerry montgomery <jerry@jerrymontgomery.org> wrote:

No worries lifting the M_15. We lift them using the chainplates without worry. We do use woven roving in that area; the stainless washers are more than strong enough. Also, you can lift the M_15 using the Stainless Stern Cleats as well. We've made several lifting harnesses for customers that launch using a Yacht Club crane. Those chainplates are thru bolted using large stainless washers. Same for the cleats. Bob
