Re: M_Boats: Old fashioned British dinghy towing (quotes)
Speaking of stern drag painters, the biggest problem I've had with towing a hard shell kayak is in following seas. It just loves to surf those waves and then peel off to one side or the other, just to be yanked back in line by the tow line. I experimented with a using an old wheelbarrow tire as a drogue behind the kayak. That really straightened her out, and made her behave, but the problem came when I no longer wanted all that drag back there. Getting the kayak alongside and then trying to reach the stern to grab the "drogue" line proved to be very awkward. I've resorted to bringing the bow of the kayak right up under one of the stern cleats and tying her off there when she starts her surfing tricks.
