Our Montgomery 15 is a good boat. We were sailing on Union Valley Reservoir in the Crystal basin near Kyburz off of Highway 50. We were stopped and then suddenly hit by a strong gust at an exact 90 degrees. It threw me to the down side and our boat capsized. Within seconds it righted itself. There was no water in the cabin or on the mainsail. We were fine.
glad to read you are fine. -- :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com On Thu, Sep 10, 2015 at 2:15 PM, V Gates <fairoaksca8139@gmail.com> wrote:

Capsized means the boat went upside down. I believe what you experienced was a knockdown. -----Original Message----- From: Dave Scobie <scoobscobie@gmail.com> To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thu, Sep 10, 2015 1:21 pm Subject: Re: M_Boats: Capsized glad to read you are fine. -- :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com On Thu, Sep 10, 2015 at 2:15 PM, V Gates <fairoaksca8139@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks for sharing. It's good to hear reports of how our boats behave in unusual circumstances. Especially when all turns out well for the captain and crew. Jim M17 "Spirit" Sent from my iPhone

Has anybody experienced a knock down in a 17? If so, how did it perform? Were the companionway boards in or out? Tom B On Thu, Sep 10, 2015 at 5:24 PM, James Poulakis <picfo@comcast.net> wrote:

I once took a 38 kt gust (measured on an anemometer on a nearby boat) sailing on a beam reach with full main and 135 genoa flying, broached, and ended up taking a gallon or two of green water into the cockpit, but she rounded up nicely into the wind. I'm not sure that counts as a knockdown, but it's as close as I've come. Couldn't have been better-behaved. Thanks, Jerry! The boat did not turtle, however water came over the railing and into the cockpit. On Thu, Sep 10, 2015 at 5:05 PM, Rick Davies <jdavies104@gmail.com> wrote:

You know, sometime I feel a little smug about our keel boats with there ballast that makes them much less prone to capsizing. then I see this. I was reading Francis B. Cooke about his cruising boats. One of his favorites was a little "tabloid" cruiser, 18' long, 6' beam, 3.5 ' draught. Sound a little like our 17? But his ballast was a1300 lbs iron keel with a extra 1300 lb inside ballast. 2600 lbs ballast without considering the weight of the boat. No wonder he considered her "stiff as a church". Got my 15 out today with my son. We spent 3 hrs drifting and I do mean drifting. Maybe another time. Chesley Sugg M15 Mouse
We had one or two righted itself quickly and came back under control with little effort.
