Re: M_Boats: M23 Still For Sale in AZ for $5800 or offer
Respectfully, I have ask. Have you sailed a Compac 23 upwind? or developed stress fractures in the hull of a Catalina 22? I have, I've owned and sailed both. I now own a M23. Sometimes one has to fully understand an object to truly know how to appreciate its value book or no book. Rick M23 Raven ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Like Rick, I have owned two other sailboats. A Hunter 23 and a Seaward Fox. I am quite pleased with my little M15. The only thing I miss is the bow sprit on the Fox, a great way to hang the anchor. The Fox was well made, but sailed poorly upwind or dawn. Joe Moore M15 #641 "Midnight Passage" On 9/22/07 11:53 PM, "Rmceagrella@aol.com" <Rmceagrella@aol.com> wrote:

Rick, Joe, I bought my M17 because it looked cute, it was easy to set up, I could singlehand it, and it was priced right. Oh yea, there was some negotiating (the new "n" word). Seems like I traded some old guns, a Pioneer Hi-FI, an Empire turntable, and a couple thousand cash. I later traded the Montgomery for a Taiwan-built floating teak plantation (my bad). That piece of junk couldn't get out of it's own way. Within a year, I owned and seriously raced a J22. I've share-owned and raced a Colgate, a Kirby, and a Farr. My grandson (8 y.o.) owns a races a Sunfish. I know what you mean, well-made, but sails poorly. Willy

Rick, If you're happy with your M23, that's all that matters. The boats were never popular--just look at the numbers. But so what? To each his own. I was happy with my M17 and I've never regretted buying it. Are there better boats than Montgomery? Yes. Are there better values than Montgomery? You bet. Is a 1980's M17 worth every bit of $6,000+? No--not to a knowledgeable sailor. My opinion on the "price" of a boat. I once heard a couple guys get into a discussion about the price of a dog once. This one gentleman had just bought a pedigreed rotweiller or something and the other guy said he would never pay $600 for a purebread anything. I thought to myself "what a fool" if they think that the price of the dog was the only expense of a dog. After 15 years i wonder what the price of food, vet bills, leashes, toys, etc came to. And the guy got the exact dog he wanted and he enjoyed it for a lifetime (the dog's lifetime). Is a Beamer worth the price? I mean it gets you there just like the Corolla, but... to some it makes sense, to others not so much. Think about the "price" of owning a boat... the gas it took to fill the tow vehicle on each trip. The beer purchases, the repairs, the ramp fees, the upgrades, the property tax, the insurance... all the expenses of owning a boat. Don't get all caught up in the initial purchase price. It's a way of life, not a stock option. Buy the boat you love!!!! Can you sell it for pretty much what you bought it for? With a Montgomery the answer is usually "yes". I get compliments on my boat every time i take her out... does that mean much to me? No... not really... but i have to tell you that in my mind i give the boat compliments every time i walk down to her at the ramp after parking my truck. I love looking at her. I love the way she sails... i love the safety factor... I simply love my boat and if i keep her for 15 years the initial purchase price means little... Jeff Proud and still giddy owner of M17 #336

My 1980's M17 can't be bought for $6000, so I guess that means if I ever sell her (ha ha) I'll need to find a gullible buyer, eh? *grin* Tod M17 #408 (1987) BuscaBrisas No virus found in this outgoing message.
