I also agree she is a wonderful looking craft.
Ah, the PS Orion! A friend has had one of those for ten years or so, and it's probably the boat I would most like to own. I've sailed with him many times, and as somebody mentioned it's not particularly fleet to weather (although it's never seemed _that_ bad!). There aren't many that I prefer to the Vancouver 25, but the Orion... The reason I heard that the Orion is no longer in production is that it's just too expensive to build -- PS could build a bigger boat for not much more money, but sell it for a lot more. Giles Morris
A couple of years ago, after a CBC, I was alone heading back to South River from Knapps Narrows. From the North end of Poplar Island, in a blustery but steady, northerly, I kept hard on the wind and thought I could just make South River without tacking. Turns out, I made it all the way to the marina, at the Rt 2 bridge, without tacking! What fun! Anyway, I probably should have reefed, but it was pretty steady and I could luff a little when necessary. I approached, caught and passed a really salty looking boat after leaving Poplar Narrows. I'm sure it was an Orion. He was to windward of me and not heading as close as Storm Petrel, but I was definitely faster, too. After I passed him, he tacked back to the North East. 'Nuf said. I'm sure that isn't going to happen in all conditions, but it's getting to the point where if it doesn't have a "J" on the sail or something like that, I'm disappointed if she doesn't pass them. ;-) Tod -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces+htmills=bright.net@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces+htmills=bright.net@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Craig F. 'Nuf said? If you want to test your boat speed (and your sailing skills) find yourself a local racing fleet and join them. However, don't assume that every boat you pass on Sunday afternoon is a slower boat or that you're the cat's meow to sailing. I've raced a 15 in PHRF and Portsmouth fleets, and it's got great speed for it's size. And, I raced against some against flush deck M-17's years ago that kicked butt on much larger boats in a tough fleet. However, contrary to the saying about "two boats on the water and you have a race" there are a whole lot of folks who are just out there just to be out there and have their boats trimmed accordingly. It's no secret that the M's take the small boat races wherever they go. But, before you assume you can beat 30+ Beneteaus every day of the week find one who is actually racing and not one that you passed while it was out for a day sail Steve
uh, that's why I qualified it, Steve, and added in the previous post that I could claim no credit, just expressing joy with such a well-designed boat. There's nothing like one-design to sort out who can and who can't. If I recall correctly, Bill grew up sailing Thistles? Tod, Racing Thistles. Few just sail them. And I'll bet Tod is the only one on the list who has cruised in a Thistle. What's the buzz on the performance of the PS 25'? Personally, I prefer the look of the double-ended, black-hulled PS 25' . . . No standing headroom below, but for someone as short as me, that's not a huge concern . . . ----- Original Message ----- From: Morris, Giles To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Sent: Monday, November 15, 2004 2:40 PM Subject: PS Orion
