M15 Interior "spatter" paint composition
Hi everyone! The previous owner of my MMP '83 M15 painted the upper portions of the cabin interior in a nice 1 part easypoxy or similar paint in dark blue (apparently to match the sheer stripe). I was going to prime & paint over it in off white to match the rest of the interior, but noticed that the blue is somewhat flaky and has bubbles -- he obviously didn't sand & prime under it, and the blue is not adhering to the original finish in some places. Question for you guys (maybe Jerry) is: What was the composition of the original spatter finish that was applied, and is there any stripper that could take off the blue, but leave the original finish? I'd hate to paint over this, only to have everything look crappy in a few months. The dreaded "previous owner" syndrome!
The original finish was gel coat, and the "splatter" is gel coat mixed about 50--50 with webbing solution, which is a thick liquid (like STP). The gelcoat is catylized, with surfacing agent added, and brushed on. The web is sprayed on using a pressure pot gun under low pressure, like 20 lbs. Try using acetone to take off the blue paint. It'll soften the underlaying gelcoat but won't hurt it. If that doesn't work you're on your own! Good luck. Rather than re-coat with gel coat I'd give it a light coat of epoxy primer (with a brush) Then go to a commercial auto body shop supplier (look for a PPG dealer) and get a good grade of 2-part polyurethane paint and have them add a flattener to cut the gloss. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joey Stubbs" <joey.stubbs@earthlink.net> To: <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, June 03, 2011 9:31 AM Subject: M_Boats: M15 Interior "spatter" paint composition
