Educate me about shipping boats
How do you get a smallish boat like an M15 or M17 shipped across the country without doing it yourself? Is it best to have the boat/trailer combo put onto a flatbed? Any war stories? Recommended shipping companies? Thanks for your advice, Charlie -- Charlie Fortner Earth, USA, GA, Atlanta
Bob Eeg at Montgomery Boats ships boats and trailers around the country all the time. Perhaps he can give you some advice. Rick M17 #633 Lynne L On Mon, Sep 9, 2013 at 2:05 PM, Charlie Fortner <charlie@rentrof.net> wrote:

If it's on a trailer in good working order and you don't mind the road miles on the trailer, you can contract with independent haulers through online self-broker/self-service sites like UShip.com. My brother found a hauler to bring a trailer (travel, not boat) from VT to CA this way. All went well. Only "war story" was that (for those familiar with the Sierra foothills, in particular Highway 120 to Yosemite) the hauler was from NC or thereabouts and not locally familiar so he just followed an online mapping suggested route that took him and his quite large box-cube cargo truck with my brother's 22 ft. Airstream behind it up Old Priest Grade (short but narrow, winding and super steep) instead of the "new" (much longer but gentler) highway grade...ooops! His load was technically illegal on that road even I think. He made it OK, though he did say his tranny got rather hotter than usual by the top. So...if you have those kinds of local "backroads to avoid" be sure to let a contract hauler not familiar with the area know ahead of time. cheers, John S.

Hi Charlie, I had my M17 shipped from Colorado to Portland OR. I have a wonderful shipping broker I used...I will send you his contact info this evening when I get home from work. He arranged transport with my boat and trailer on a flatbed. The cost was $1400k. He kept me in communication every step along the way...can't say enough good things about him.
