RE: M_Boats: Regarding the hole size in the center board
Bob, the reason I am asking is that my M-15 is a 1981 model (MMP151891281) and I think the centerboard had steel in it. I had opened up on 3 sides and had to be extracted forceably by Morrison Marine (Mel)here is Sacramento. It was worth it and I am glad I did it. ---Thanks for the new centerboard Bob, ----Larry -----Original Message----- From: Bob [mailto:Bobeeg@earthlink.net] Sent: Wednesday, December 22, 2004 12:20 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: Regarding the hole size in the center board Hi Larry We use lead on all our boats. Even in the centerboards. Never have used steel in anything. Steel rusts and swells. In fact all the Montgomery sailboats built after a certain date in 1987 are LEAD. Have a good one Larry! Bob, I received a new centerboard from you and it is installed on my M-15. Since I did not ask for a lead filled CB can I assume it has steel on the inside? Are the lead filled CB's still the same total weight as the steel filled ones?
Thanks Bob. ---Larry Hughston hull# 189.

You could also tape the bottom of the hole, then fill the entire space with some mat fibers and epoxy to the top. After it cures, then re-drill the hole with a 3/8 drill bit.
In either case we do have lead filled centerboards available. These will never rust or crack.
Your close enough to come and get one.

I did not change the opening to the hole. The cracks and voids were on the inside. I ended up using Bondo rather than 5 minute epoxy. I knew that I would have to file with a rasp to the correct internal size. Epoxy would have been like working in concrete.
