I'm thinking of installing a pair of external gates from Mastgates.com on my mast, which has a double-sided slot. Anyone out there have experience with these? Seems as if they'd be a big help in reefing underway. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks, Rick M17 #633 Lynne L
Rick, If these devices keep the slugs from dropping out when you lower the sail to reef, I don't see how you can do without them. I fabricated a gate to do the same thing, but it was probably a lot more work and not as slick. Tom Jenkins M17 #626 On Apr 12, 2013, at 11:33 AM, Rick Davies wrote:

Rick If you trailer the design accommodates quick removal and attachment. If you leave the boat at a slip or mooring with the sail on you might want to consider his permanent design. I have used both and favor the permanent design as I keep the sail on except when trailing George We can not control the Wind But we can adjust our Sails -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Tom Jenkins Sent: Friday, April 12, 2013 2:23 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: Mastgates Rick, If these devices keep the slugs from dropping out when you lower the sail to reef, I don't see how you can do without them. Thanks to everybody for the quick feedback and advice. Makes my decision to go ahead pretty easy. This sure is a great forum. Thanks, Rick M17 #633 Lynne L On Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 4:21 PM, George R. Iemmolo <griemmolo2@gmail.com>wrote:

Rick,
If these devices keep the slugs from dropping out when you lower the sail to reef, I don't see how you can do without them. I fabricated a gate to do the same thing, but it was probably a lot more work and not as slick.

Rick, I looked again a the diagram of their "External fixed MastGate, and it looks almost identical to what I made. If it is not too expensive, it is something to consider seriously. I don't know about the hinged model, but I'm not sure it is worth the presumed extra cost unless you drop your mast or remove the boom and sails every day. No experience with them as I still prefer bolt rope for my luff but I met the designer on a cruise with the WWPotter group. All of the people using slugs on the cruise (10 boats) and they were all using his product and they swear by them. Tom himself is a very conscientious person and was quite interested in continuously improving his product. Thanks Doug On Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 11:33 AM, Rick Davies <jdavies104@gmail.com> wrote:

I think you will need 2 moveable external gates. I made the mistake in ordering the standard set up of one fixed and one moveable. Can't get the gooseneck in the slot opening with the fixed in place. Will have to replace it with another moveable one. Send Tom Luque detailed sketch or photos of your set up. He is good to work with on this.
