Just very quiet ... the archive shows the message before yours to be written on the 10th. Fran Lebowitz wrote:

Thanks Frank and David, for the heads up. Yes, folks are busy and it's getting cold, too, in some places. Here in Bellingham, we didn't get the promised snow, but the temps have dipped to freezing. I'm off to San Diego County on Tuesday for a few weeks. Somewhat warmer and sunnier there! Happy Holidays ALL! Hi Fran, I read you loud and clear on the East Coast, as well. We have had a lot of rain in Connecticut, with power outages in the western Connecticut hills; the temperature is around freezing; normal for this time of the year. Happy Holidays to you and to all the M-gang. Connie Benneck Fran Lebowitz wrote:

Fran, Blame it on the season and the weather. Even here on the Texas Gulf coast, we have had unseasonably cold reather. We usually only have a couple of overnight freezes a year but have already had several. We even had 3 inches of snow this week when it is rare to have even an inch. Must be global warming. It is little cold and blustery for sailing and it is even too cold to be putting barrier coat and bottom paint on Griselda. Perfect weather for studying charts and planning future sailing activity. With all the posts about various group cruises, there is plenty to think about. I have been studying charts of the South Texas bays and the ICW in preperation for the "Texas 200" in June. The event is a 200 mile, 5 day, broad reach and run "sleigh ride" through some of the most uninhabited coastline in the USA. Each evening the participants get together and have a good time. I really hope things work out to go. Here is a holiday toast to all of you who are sitting inside thinking about next season. Ron M17 #14, (fin Keel) Griselda.

Ron, I don't know much about Texas, but that sounds like a sail north from Port Isabel to around Matagorda. Judging by a description I read on the web from someone who has done it a time or two, it could be a real dream sail. Google Earth shows some serious shoals inshore of Padre Island and elsewhere, but I assume you have identified passages deep enough for shallow draft boats. Are there spots to pull ashore and check out the wildlife and do some fishing, or is it an anchor-out experience? Anyway, I hope things work out for you and your compadres. Maybe the rest of us will beg for a repeat when you give us a report. You can check out the event at www.texas200.com . There is a lot of shallow water and one has to be careful of his navagation if outside the ICW. Covering 200 miles in 5 days doesn't leave much time to get out and tourist. The first night is an anchor out or pull up on a shell island for the beach cruisers and catamarans, the second at a yacht club and the 3rd and 4th are anchor outs. The course is from Port Mansfiedld to Port Lavaca. I have sailed the Gulf coast bays and an essential piece of equipment is a good camera with a selection of lenses. If you have crew to do the photography, there is abundant bird and wildlife to photograph. The fishing is great and there is no reason why one could not have a trolling rig out. I would love to see a couple of other Montys in the event if I am able to participate. Ron M17 #14 (fin keel) Griselda

Hey Ron, I'm thinking about the trip myself. I'm up in San Antonio and have a M-15. As I understand the trip it starts on Sunday. Is there a way to catch up if you can't start until Monday. Where will the group be Monday night and is there a place to launch? David, It might be hard to join the group on Monday because the overnight stop is at a side channel on the land cut of the ICW which is in the middle of nowhere between Port Mansfiedl and Corpus Christi. Tuesday would be less of a problem since the second overnight is the Padre island Yacht club. I will be a first time participant so am not too sure of many of the details. I suggest you check the website www.texas200.com for information. Chuck Leinweber of Duckworks is the organizer and would be able to answer questions about scheduling. It would be nice to have a couple of Montys there. Ron M17#14 (fin Keel) Griselda

I'm looking for ideas for how to make and attach racks on the interior companionway bulkheads for easy-to-get items, ie. binos, charts, VHF, knife, and other small stuff that tend to disappear when you need them. Would heli-coils work?? Thanks, Joe
Joe, If you are referring to the flat space just inside the cabin on the left and right of the hatch door, then I do have a suggestion.? You can take 3/8 marine plywood and cut two templates the correct size as the bulkheads.? Prep the wood as desired.? To attach the boards, remove the screws?from?inside the cabin?that hold the hatch boards rails.? Purchase longer screws and use these to attach the boards you made while reattaching the hatch board rails.? You now have a solid backing board that can be used to attach any type of accessory you would like.? I hate putting holes in my boat, so I use whatever method available?so I don't need to drill.? ? If you need additional instructions, email me off list and I'd be happy to help.
