Hi George, The Forespar box is closed, so no leakage into the boat possible - provided you put a sealer on the surface before screwing it in place. I find it does a nice job of holding a course, and being able to twist and change length means that you can fine tune your course holding. Two small jam cleats mounted on the P / S side of the cockpit (on the flat surface at the top) are used for holding and adjusting the bungee cord tiller holder; for maintaining a course, or when I leave the boat.
