Hi Tom, (In my opinion) The weak spot of the M-17 is the low bridgedeck. If one were swamped, the easiest place for the water to flood is the cabin. Can't say I've heard of that happening to a M-17. But, it's logical. I want to do the same project you're mentioning. And I'll change to a three piece campanionway board, so I can peg the bottom one in. By doing so, I'll be creating a large tub of water to drain out... and quickly. If you get involved with this. Be sure to take lots of pics. I will also, but you'll probably be first to get it done.
