Oar Length for an M15 / Location of Oar Sockets
Here's some pictures (links below) of where I installed
the oar sockets for my M15. They're about halfway between the companionway and transom. They're screwed into the outer side of the coaming, using 6" stainless steel bolts, with a 1/4" wooden backing plate on each side of the coaming. Ultimately I covered the exposed bolts with tape and rubber covers so as not to snag self on same. They are the side socket types, as compared to top sockets. The oar locks I used were metal gull-shaped ones, open on the top, rather than closed loop type oarlocks. Closed loop oarlocks didn't let me raise the oar handle high enough to get a great enough angle so as to have the oar blade make contact with the water. With 8 1/2' oars, and the blades barely touching the water, was able to move the M15 1.5 mph in flat water. Am hopeful with long enough oars, to get 2 to 2.5. Just not sure if 9.5' will be enough. Have considered sculling but I believe a sculling oar for my M15 would need to be as long as, or longer than the Monty, and that's just too much oar to be lugging around. Oars that can be broken down into two pieces seems more practical. Thanks to all.
