Just got back from 4 days on Champlain with 3 days of good winds & 1 calm day. Most anchorages were good although one highly recommended by a cruising guide was too crowded for my taste; saw one boat drag out into the lake. Will be worth returning next year Mike, *Fionnula*
Nice lake isn't it Mike? We spent a week there last September. Where did you launch from? Which was the crowded anchorage? Valcourt Island? Bill Wickett Makin' Time, M17 On Fri, Aug 27, 2010 at 2:50 PM, Michael Murphy <mikeandpaula48@gmail.com>wrote:

We launched at Port Henry: nice double ramp w/ restroom & small breakwater. Partridge Harbor had 6 boats in it; 2 30'-ers got out of the waves on one side but other 4 got rocked by swells & wakes off the lake. Lot of motor boat traffic until 9PM. Saw 5 boats in there by 4 PM on our return to Port Henry. Had good holding in Porter Bay in 16' of water. Button Bay provided good shelter from westerly storm winds. On 8/29/2010 11:00 AM, Michael Murphy Hi Gang, The first time we went to Lake Champlain, we used Essex Marina as a base of operations. We launched at the next town north of Essex, at Willsboro. There you will find a lovely wide concrete launching ramp area that was built by the State of New York. There was no charge for launching your boat, and there was very little traffic. That is great for us sailors who need some time to step the mast, and do all the other necessary things sailors have to do, that motorboat operators don't do. The ramp is located at the bottom end of Willsboro Bay. There are good signs on the highway showing you how to reach the ramp. It is a very pleasant sail from the launch ramp area (with good parking possibilities, and at no cost) out of Willsboro Bay and then back down to Essex. From Essex Marina, you can sail directly across Lake Champlain, and there are some nice bays to explore. We've gone there with our ComPac 16, and after having gotten religion, with our M15. We stayed at a nice bed and breakfast just north of Essex, and usually had dinner at some of the Willsboro restaurants, that ranged from very reasonably prices to gourmet/elegant and with prices a good bit higher. On bad weather days where you don't want to go sailing, you can always drive to Port Kent, leave the car there, and then take the ferry to downtown Burlington where you then can walk all around town. Ausable Chasm is in the same area, and well worth a visit and a hike down along the chasm trail. Connie & Katrina ex M15 #400 LEPPO Essex Marine has a very small launching ramp which, after becoming familiar with the area, and loosing my fear of the steep climb from the Marina up to Main Street of Essex, we then just used the Essex Marina
