Hot glue might be suitable and fast. Depending on the type of glue release when making the mold could be a problem so maybe a release film of oil, vasoline or vegetable spray might work. I'll try experimenting, problem is my boat is all buttoned up for winter. A thought I had from Steve's "sculpy" suggestion was to soften wax, like a candle with a heat gun. This type of mold would probably release from the hardened epoxy without any additional release film. Rick Langer M15 #337 "Bluebird" p.s. Doug, Tod, I can unbutton my boat pretty fast if anyone wants to head to the Bahamas this winter, or maybe the Keys.
Got in late on this discourse, so if I'm off-base, please forgive me. There are release agents that are proven and available. If you go to all the trouble of making a pattern, then a mold, you have a lot of time invested. Why risk it all on a home remedy release agent. One that I have used quite successfully in making airplane cowling parts is poly-vinyl-alcohol (PVA) and it's water soluble, so clean-up is easy. PVA should be sprayed on with a mist coat, being careful not to spray on so much that it runs. Before the PVA is sprayed on, the pattern ( aka, the plug) should be waxed with a carnauba wax. When the final product is laid-up into the mold, the same procedure is followed.
