Hello! A year ago, I purchased a 1981 M-15 from a fine gentleman and sailor who hails from Ashland, OR. Whereas the owner sailed on fresh water and powered the boat via Minn-Kota electrics, I realized I needed an appropriate gas engine for Puget Sound departures and returns. After checking in the Montgomery sailors, I decided to go with the Honda 2hp. Folks told me that, barring rough seas, the short- shaft wouldn't produce cavitation. I've only had her out a couple of times since, and the engine via fixed, factory mount seems to function reasonably well. I DID alter the mount a bit, though, so that the engine housing would just clear the stern in the upright locked position. The other advantage of the short-shaft is its portability and ease of storing. By the way, found the engine on Craigslist—2 years old, little use, $700 for a $1K motor. I am looking for a Honda 2hp and the only one I could find used in my area was a short shaft.

I will be sailing in fresh and saltwater. I am concerned the short shaft will come out of the water on the rough days on Puget Sound.

moti: i would not run the M15 on a short-shaft. i have a long-shaft honda 2H and i've been in conditions where i did cavitated a few times. these were all in south puget sound. as i could keep things in-hand by moving my body closer to the stern (caused more pounding of the bow) and had some seaway to motor a bit off the wind i was able to do OK. if i had a short-shaft motor i believe i would have been in a pickle of situation as i wouldn't have been able to make any headway against the wind and tide. i single-hand ... if i go to the bow the motor is cavitation center (i'm at 220#) with my long-shaft. dave scobie M15 #288 - Scred (yes, i finally named the boat) Moti Krauthamer <moti@thumbprintcorp.com> wrote: Hello, I know this topic has been discussed before but does anyone have experience with a Honda 2hp short shaft on an M15 with a fixed mount?
