Larry, I installed a Bomar hatch just aft of the shallow locker on the starboard side of the cockpit. The hatch was less than $40, it give access to the ladder mount on the transom and, best of all, it provides another storage area which was previously inaccessible. I find it perfect to use as a sail locker. On my boat the motor mount is reachable through the deep locker on the port side of the cockpit, so with an extension on your racket you shouldn't have to cut any holes in the transom. I am reluctant to go ahead with mounting the ladder that I have. I am reluctant to bore a large access hole in the transom. Will have to bore two holes if I also wish to install a new adjustable motor mount to replace the original fixed mount? I want to do this right....I don't want to use any wood anywhere in this installation. Will aluminum plate do the job?
