Greg, Something sounds suspicious. I have M15 #310 and the backing bar on mine is about 2 " long to spread the weight. If yours can be rotated 90 degrees it is way too small. The backing bar on mine cannot be threaded as there would be no way to get it tight to the hull deck joint. I have never had mine off but I think the backing plate is actually round bar stock or tube stock to better match the curve of the hull/deck joint. My boat is a bit of a drive but if you would send me pictures of yours off list I will compare it to mine and send you pictures of mine. The newer boats have a slightly smaller backing plate but you cannot rotate it 90 degrees. Don't know if this helps but on my 2008 M17 the chain plates are through bolted with a SS backing plate secured with the nylon locking nuts. You should be able to get a ss backing plate from any metal fabricator. If you can't let me know and I can see what a pair would cost here.
