Okay, how do you all get to shore in your Monty's??? I'm thinking about one of the little pram montys the 6-8.? Also, If you were to move up would anyone get a Nor'sea 27?? A guy in my town has one he is restoring (ready in two years or so).? It would be a good time for me to put in a bid since then I could get some choice as to interior.? It's an Aft Cockpit, I like Aft Cockpits but they tend to not be as popular as the Aft Cabin.? Thoughts? At your service Larry Pegg Pilgrim M-17 #55
Hi Larry, When I had my M15 I needed a dinghy to get ashore - still haven't learned how to walk on water. I built a Bolger NYMPH; a pram, that rows very well, and was/is great for two people. The NYMPH is light weight and was easy to put on a roof rack on our VW Jetta wagon. Connie larrypegg@aol.com wrote:

Hi Larry, I'm told the aft cabin has it's place for the Blue Water folks. Someone else should verify this: The aft cabin has a kinder motion for berthing at sea, puts you closer to the wheel for emergencies, makes a great storage/workshop and has less cockpit for quicker release of water during the nasties. Sure sounds good. My sister used hers for storage and workshop. Just watched the Antonio Bandaras (sp) movie 13 Warrior (again). The scene with the Norsemen laughing at the gale, while Antonio sits below the rail during the trip to the North is classic. I know, I know... I'm rambling Bill On 10/23/08, chbenneck@sbcglobal.net <chbenneck@sbcglobal.net> wrote:

Depending on the depth of water and type of shore, an M15 and to a lessor extent, an M17 IS a dinghy. Both boats will nose up to a shoreline. The M15 rudder kicks up, so that gets you pretty shallow. On a shoreline that allows me get my keel and raised rudder close enough, I can step ashore off the bow of the M17. Set a stern anchor (with some chain), nose up to the shore and stretch the stern anchor rode tight and cleat it off. Take a line or bow anchor with you off the front. The weight of the chain will back the boat off the shoreline a bit, where it will ride steady anchored off the stern and tied or anchored off the bow to shore. To get back on board, pull the bow line up to the shore and hop aboard. (Assumes some agility). If the water is really shallow, both boats will get you close enough you could probably wade ashore from an anchored position, using a swim ladder to get back aboard. Howard

My M17 is one of the origonal fin keel models with 39" draft so, I need a dinghy to get ashore. When I got the boat from my brother, it came with a 9 foot "Fatty Knees" (Lyle Hess designed lapstrake). It tows like a dream and is very easy to row or sail. It is a bit heavy at 85 pounds but I can load it on the top rack of my Pontiac Torrent by myself using a roller on the rear cross bar. The boat is still in production by Eady & Duff and is a real quality bit of work. Ron M17 #14 Griselda

Hi Larry, I owned SeaGray, an '91 aft cabin NS27 for 4 years. I loved it and absolutely hated having to sell her. The only reason I did was because the water here on the outer banks of NC are just too shallow, i.e. 2-3' and also because I wasn't using her for what she was intended. I liked the aft cabin. The only downside was getting to the rear cleats in a hurry. But that was more than made up for having all the wonderfull space and additional sleeping space. It was great for taking folks for an overnighter and they could have the main salon and I would take the aft cabin or vice versa. Fabulously sailing boat. Rock hard and easily shouldered through 4-6' waves. I seldom used the dodger. It was great. On Spirit we have an Achilles LT-2 inflatable dinghy. It fits well on the starboard quarterberth where it slides completely out of the away . I looked into folding and inflatable kayaks but I have a girlfriend and an 75# dog. Consequently, the dinghy's truck-like carrying capacity took priority over the kayak's sports-car paddling characteristics. The LT-2 rows exactly like you'd expect a blunt- nosed, flat-bottom, 7'-3" inflatable w/ captive aluminum oars to row. Luckily, M17s can poke their nose pretty close to shore so my dinghy trips are blessedly short. Overall, I'm happy with the LT-2 and recommend it to folks who need some carrying capacity in their dinghy but sail in areas where towing isn't advisable. The N/S 27 is tied with the Shannon 28 for my all-time favorite boats in this size range. Jim Poulakis M17 "Spirit" On Oct 22, 2008, at 8:18 PM, larrypegg@aol.com wrote:
