I'd say its 25 mpg performance had as much to do with its boxy shape as its horsepower. I've driven a 4-door Suzuki Sidekick for 12 years and typically get 23-28 mpg, in spite of a small 1.6 liter engine with a lot less horsepower than the Element's. Still, a very cool looking car! Just got my April 2004 "Car And Driver" Magazine. There is a great article on the Element. If you didn't love the car before, you will after you read what these guys wrote. One testament says the staff loved the car so much they put on 40,000 miles in 10 months. All in the name of test driving. Alas, not the same as the Civic engine. Civic is 106 hp. The Element is 160 hp. However, still averaged 25 mpg. (I hate spending money on gas)
