looking for an M15 Mast Extrusion on the West Coast
Hi Everyone. M15 owner in San Francisco here. I'm trying to figure out if I can purchase a replacement mast extrusion for my M15 from a spar maker on the West Coast of the US. Basically, the Dwyer M-4 but without the $200 shipping cost from Connecticut. On the advice of Svensen's Marine in Alameda, I've tried Ballenger Spars in Watsonville, CA (nothing that small) as well as Lefeill in LA (they could only suggest Dwyer for a boat as small as a Monty 15). Any tips or advice appreciated. I just can't believe that Dwyer is the only company in the US that can provide me with a mast. Shipping cost aside, I'd love to not have to go with Dwyer as their customer service has been terrible for me in the past. Thanks, Thom San Francisco
You should ask Jerry if he can help. You might try Columbia Pacific Extrusion used to make a clone of the DM5 mast. Thom- the Holder 20 uses (or at least used to use) the same tube, Ron Holder and I used to buy them together in large batches directly from the extruder. It's called the Sparcraft 103 section. maybe you can dig up one from a wrecked- out Holder. Failing that, you might call Dave Scobie at Sage Marine in Golden CO ; they are buying the larger Sage 17 masts from Dwyer and I assume they get a good break on freight. Dave just dropped by my place (Sacramento) on his way back from delivering a boat in Eureka, but he might have more deliveries in the area. We're all sailing in Lake Pleasant, AZ in two weeks so I could shuttle the mast back from there but the timing is too short. But you might contact them- you never know. With luck, Sage will be buying masts for the upcoming Sage 15 by next summer so will be getting them in quantity. We plan to use either a DM 3 or, more likely, a DM284 on the prototype. Either one would work for an M-15; we replaced the mast on Sal's M-15 with a DM284 and it worked fine. That would be my first choice. Maybe they could make you a sweet deal on Sal and Gail's mast and then replace theirs? In its past life, my new-to-me 1976 M17's boom snapped in two and was welded back together. The repair seems solid but the aesthetics have been compromised. What was the original boom section and is it still available? If not, what would be a suitable replacement? I'm in New England so Dwyer is actually a good option for me. Their DM-3 section is a close match, but it appears they only sell it as a mast section and do not carry boom ends or goosenecks for it. The DM-2 looks a little too flimsy. That leaves the DM-275, which should be stout enough but has an elliptical instead of a teardrop section. Thoughts? Hi Everyone. M15 owner in San Francisco here.
