Hello Folks,
This is a quick note to let our Monty community know that after a very long wait, I have just received notice from xmission.com that the email list server software that has powered our *montgomery_boats* list since Keith Diehl first set it up is now in the process of being upgraded. Things might be a bit bumpy for a few days or so please be patient. The new software also holds the promise of restoring a functioning searchable archive... Below is a copy of the message I received from xmission today...
*"The Mailman software at XMission for https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmailman.xmission.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cb7c2fd7274c44f6423cc08d8dde9a329%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637503342823837472%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=3RWb%2FB1uWf1ZuYljZA5JnJ6KeTTlB%2BUTs5%2BLTdE8J3s%3D&reserved=0 <https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmailman.xmission.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cb7c2fd7274c44f6423cc08d8dde9a329%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637503342823837472%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=3RWb%2FB1uWf1ZuYljZA5JnJ6KeTTlB%2BUTs5%2BLTdE8J3s%3D&reserved=0> has seen its most significant upgrade in 20 years. All of the old lists, with their subscribers, and hopefully their subscriber settings (moderated, etc) have been imported into the new software. The last 20 years of Mailman archives are being slowly imported into a new archiver, "Hyperkitty" which is significantly cleaner, smarter, and all-around better than the old archiver, "Lurker". There may be a chance that the archives which preceded the 2001 installation of Mailman may be imported into their respective lists as well."*

A friend of mine tried putting a sculling oar on his M15. Neither of us at the time new much about sculling, but nonetheless the results were not very impressive. We were not able to proceed very well agains a light current or moderate breeze. YMMV. The regular oars though are pretty practical. I could see going several miles (which I did on the salish 100, although it is a little tiring). sculling didn't seem like a very practical solution. The technique though is good to learn just for close quarter maneuvering and just do it by hand without using the oarlock.

I am fooling around with the concept of a sculling oar rigged on to my M-15 outboard bracket. My concern is what to do with massive oars when sailing. I have a canoe paddle, on to which I have attached, with adjustable metal straps, an equal length piece of oak handrail (as used on stairs.). I simply loosen the straps and pull out the handrail and I have about an 8' oar. I have yet to use it. This summer, I'll report on how it works. Rimas "Ray" Aukstuolis

Hello all. Wondering if anyone's successfully used oars on their Monty 15. I have oarlocks installed on the coaming, flush with the coaming deck. I put a wood bench across the seats near the companionway and sit on it. I tried using 8 1/2' oars, and it was a no-go. Too short. Blades barely brushed the surface of the water. Am wondering if anyone's tried 9 1/2' oars with any success on their M15. Or 10 1/2'. The oar length calculators suggest something closer to 10 than 9. But if I can get away with 9 1/2', I will. Thank you.
