Hi Gang, Most of the time (all the time) you want the storm jib off the deck and on a pennant. Reasons: If the bow buries in a sea you don't want the storm jib to act as a big water scoop. Keep it higher and let the water flow freely under the sail. Visibility: You want to be able to see where you're going and see what's coming at you (waves); so you can take evasive action. more comments - This will make the response that Tom Smith and Jane Van Winkle get from Kerns more interesting. My M15 storm jib has the clew very high off the deck and I attach the tack to the deck fitting as I would the standard jib. The storm jib is cut so that the position of my fixed jib sheet fairlead is quite suitable for the high clewed storm jib. It works quite well in this fashion and I have used it more than I would have thought. I will keep it this way. If I were actually contemplating going offshore I might think differently but for almost any normal use of an M15 or M17 I would have the sail cut for use with the tack on the deck. For my 17, I have to go along with Doug's outlook. Busca's clew is similarly high and won't really capture any water that I'll be sailing in nor does the sail particularly block vision except in a very narrow sector that constantly moves as the boat bobs around in the waves. Because of those exceptions to Connie's observations I've opted to keep the center of effort of the sail as low as possible to reduce heeling moment. I agree with Tod and Doug on the storm jib. I did try flying my asynch on a pennant the other day. Mostly because I didn't feel like digging out a shackle and Ignoring my crew while on the foredeck attaching it. So I tied a line on the tack and attached the other end to the stemhead fitting. Later, after changing tacks, I clipped it to the bow eye! Not exactly nautical etiquette, but I wanted it down a little, without re-tying. Results: it worked better than when attached directly to the stemhead. On my 23 I had long tack pennants on both the storm jib and the drifter and would leave the working jib on the forestay and snap the other sails above it. I suppose with the 15 being fractionally rigged there is less room to play with. Dick
