Jerry and his crew built near 450 M15s that have the Nicopress eyes and the thru bolt at the hounds. I can't remember when I've read/heard one of these failing (I've read/seen the M15 shroud chainplates at the hull joint failing - one of the bolts because of crevice corrosion).
The lower machine swag fitting I've also done - using the same tool, meaning the tool Jerry actually used, to attach the fitting to the wire.
I've built many M15 standing rigs myself.
The work is easy and nothing complicated for an competent shop. The West Marine Rigging locations have trained staff. Same goes for smaller rigging shops.
The M15 rig is simple and strong. Folks have bent their masts after hitting trees and the shrouds survive with no obvious damage (though I would recommend replacing as they have obviously been stressed).

How do you know if it was done right until you have lost your mast.
On my M15 the top of the shroud has a mickeymouse crimped fitting with a thimble and a thru bolt in the mast. It has served me well for the 40 yr I have owned the Pelican. It seem like a similar rigging would work just as well at the bottom of the shroud only with "hardware store" cable clamps.
As I am rounding the west end of Catalina I would at least not be wondering about the workman ship and experience of the technician at West Marine.
Does anyone ever load test these? They do this with crane rigging as a requirement.

SEAKING is the house brand name Montgomery Ward used for their outboard motors and other boating gear back in the day. I believe the Seaking Motors were actually made by Evinrude.
Not a big deal as it is on the state DNR registration only. No titles for boats here in MN.

I owned an M-10 for awhile and it was titled as a Montgomery Ward. After I bought the boat I tried to have it corrected but that opened up a whole other can of worms. So I sailed my Montgomery Ward for a few years before I ended up selling her.

SEAKING is the house brand name Montgomery Ward used for their outboard motors and other boating gear back in the day. I believe the Seaking Motors were actually made by Evinrude.
Not a big deal as it is on the state DNR registration only. No titles for boats here in MN.

Jerry and his crew built near 450 M15s that have the Nicopress eyes and the thru bolt at the hounds. I can't remember when I've read/heard one of these failing (I've read/seen the M15 shroud chainplates at the hull joint failing - one of the bolts because of crevice corrosion).
The lower machine swag fitting I've also done - using the same tool, meaning the tool Jerry actually used, to attach the fitting to the wire.
I've built many M15 standing rigs myself.
The work is easy and nothing complicated for an competent shop. The West Marine Rigging locations have trained staff. Same goes for smaller rigging shops.
The M15 rig is simple and strong. Folks have bent their masts after hitting trees and the shrouds survive with no obvious damage (though I would recommend replacing as they have obviously been stressed).

How do you know if it was done right until you have lost your mast.
On my M15 the top of the shroud has a mickeymouse crimped fitting with a thimble and a thru bolt in the mast. It has served me well for the 40 yr I have owned the Pelican. It seem like a similar rigging would work just as well at the bottom of the shroud only with "hardware store" cable clamps.
As I am rounding the west end of Catalina I would at least not be wondering about the workman ship and experience of the technician at West Marine.
Does anyone ever load test these? They do this with crane rigging as a requirement.

Jerry and his crew built near 450 M15s that have the Nicopress eyes and the thru bolt at the hounds. I can't remember when I've read/heard one of these failing (I've read/seen the M15 shroud chainplates at the hull joint failing - one of the bolts because of crevice corrosion).
The lower machine swag fitting I've also done - using the same tool, meaning the tool Jerry actually used, to attach the fitting to the wire.
I've built many M15 standing rigs myself.
The work is easy and nothing complicated for an competent shop. The West Marine Rigging locations have trained staff. Same goes for smaller rigging shops.
The M15 rig is simple and strong. Folks have bent their masts after hitting trees and the shrouds survive with no obvious damage (though I would recommend replacing as they have obviously been stressed).

How do you know if it was done right until you have lost your mast.
On my M15 the top of the shroud has a mickeymouse crimped fitting with a thimble and a thru bolt in the mast. It has served me well for the 40 yr I have owned the Pelican. It seem like a similar rigging would work just as well at the bottom of the shroud only with "hardware store" cable clamps.
As I am rounding the west end of Catalina I would at least not be wondering about the workman ship and experience of the technician at West Marine.
Does anyone ever load test these? They do this with crane rigging as a requirement.

I owned an M-10 for awhile and it was titled as a Montgomery Ward. After I bought the boat I tried to have it corrected but that opened up a whole other can of worms. So I sailed my Montgomery Ward for a few years before I ended up selling her.

SEAKING is the house brand name Montgomery Ward used for their outboard motors and other boating gear back in the day. I believe the Seaking Motors were actually made by Evinrude.
Not a big deal as it is on the state DNR registration only. No titles for boats here in MN.

Paul. First. Lift the boat on a hoist. Then uncleat the rope pendant. It’s 5/16. The pin is a 3/8 shaft about 4 5/8 long that’s glued in with 5200. Too change the pendant LIFT THE BOAT and tap the pin right to left with a Flat punch. After it’s out the board will fall, be careful. Untie the rope. Remove 12 inches of core from the center of the new 5/16. Observe the old line and tie a figure 8 knot in the Braid uncored line. Tape the old line that’s hanging to the new line. Pull it up. Lift the front of the board and after caulking up the pin, tap it home. Put a 1/2 inch stick in the front of the centerboard trunk and gently lower the board until it rests on the stick. Now up top tie a knot to make sure the board never hits the centerboard trunk in front. (Without the stick) the knot prevents that. Squeegee more 5200 over the pin ends and lay a square of masking tape over the pin ends. It will hold until it drys and eventually fall off. Bob Sent from my iPad

Too change the pendant LIFT THE BOAT and tap the pin right to left with a Flat punch. After it’s out the board will fall, be careful. Untie the rope. Remove 12 inches of core from the center of the new 5/16. Observe the old line and tie a figure 8 knot in the Braid uncored line. Tape the old line that’s hanging to the new line. Pull it up. Jerry and his crew built near 450 M15s that have the Nicopress eyes and the thru bolt at the hounds. I can't remember when I've read/heard one of these failing (I've read/seen the M15 shroud chainplates at the hull joint failing - one of the bolts because of crevice corrosion).
The lower machine swag fitting I've also done - using the same tool, meaning the tool Jerry actually used, to attach the fitting to the wire.
I've built many M15 standing rigs myself.
The work is easy and nothing complicated for an competent shop. The West Marine Rigging locations have trained staff. Same goes for smaller rigging shops.
The M15 rig is simple and strong. Folks have bent their masts after hitting trees and the shrouds survive with no obvious damage (though I would recommend replacing as they have obviously been stressed).

How do you know if it was done right until you have lost your mast.
On my M15 the top of the shroud has a mickeymouse crimped fitting
with a
thimble and a thru bolt in the mast. It has served me well for the 40 yr I have owned the Pelican. It seem like a similar rigging would work just as well at the bottom of the shroud only with "hardware store" cable clamps.
As I am rounding the west end of Catalina I would at least not be wondering about the workman ship and experience of the technician at West Marine.
Does anyone ever load test these? They do this with crane rigging as a requirement.

I owned an M-10 for awhile and it was titled as a Montgomery Ward. After I bought the boat I tried to have it corrected but that opened up a whole other can of worms. So I sailed my Montgomery Ward for a few years before I ended up selling her.

SEAKING is the house brand name Montgomery Ward used for their outboard motors and other boating gear back in the day. I believe the Seaking Motors were actually made by Evinrude.
Not a big deal as it is on the state DNR registration only. No titles for boats here in MN.

Bob, Thanks for the procedure. I'll be doing it in a couple of weeks myself. Please clarify a couple of things from your text:
LIFT THE BOAT and tap the pin *right to left *with a Flat punch. -- Tap the pin from starboard side towards port side? -- Should the pin be completely removed then reinstalled in the same (starboard toward port) direction?
Lift the front of the board and after *caulking up the pin*... -- Should caulk be spread over the entire surface of the pin before tapping it back in?

Jerry and his crew built near 450 M15s that have the Nicopress eyes and the thru bolt at the hounds. I can't remember when I've read/heard one of these failing (I've read/seen the M15 shroud chainplates at the hull joint failing - one of the bolts because of crevice corrosion).
The lower machine swag fitting I've also done - using the same tool, meaning the tool Jerry actually used, to attach the fitting to the wire.
I've built many M15 standing rigs myself.
The work is easy and nothing complicated for an competent shop. The West Marine Rigging locations have trained staff. Same goes for smaller rigging shops.
The M15 rig is simple and strong. Folks have bent their masts after hitting trees and the shrouds survive with no obvious damage (though I would recommend replacing as they have obviously been stressed).

How do you know if it was done right until you have lost your mast.
On my M15 the top of the shroud has a mickeymouse crimped fitting
with a
thimble and a thru bolt in the mast. It has served me well for the 40 yr I have owned the Pelican. It seem like a similar rigging would work just as well at the bottom of the shroud only with "hardware store" cable clamps.
As I am rounding the west end of Catalina I would at least not be wondering about the workman ship and experience of the technician at West Marine.
Does anyone ever load test these? They do this with crane rigging as a requirement.

I owned an M-10 for awhile and it was titled as a Montgomery Ward. After I bought the boat I tried to have it corrected but that opened up a whole other can of worms. So I sailed my Montgomery Ward for a few years before I ended up selling her.

SEAKING is the house brand name Montgomery Ward used for their outboard motors and other boating gear back in the day. I believe the Seaking Motors were actually made by Evinrude.
Not a big deal as it is on the state DNR registration only. No titles for boats here in MN.

Paul. First. Lift the boat on a hoist. Then uncleat the rope pendant. It’s 5/16. The pin is a 3/8 shaft about 4 5/8 long that’s glued in with 5200. Too change the pendant LIFT THE BOAT and tap the pin right to left with a Flat punch. After it’s out the board will fall, be careful. Untie the rope. Remove 12 inches of core from the center of the new 5/16. Observe the old line and tie a figure 8 knot in the Braid uncored line. Tape the old line that’s hanging to the new line. Pull it up. Lift the front of the board and after caulking up the pin, tap it home. Put a 1/2 inch stick in the front of the centerboard trunk and gently lower the board until it rests on the stick. Now up top tie a knot to make sure the board never hits the centerboard trunk in front. (Without the stick) the knot prevents that. Jon,
I owned an M-10 for awhile and it was titled as a Montgomery Ward. After I bought the boat I tried to have it corrected but that opened up a whole other can of worms. So I sailed my Montgomery Ward for a few years before I ended up selling her.

Hans felt that little caulk spread on the pin would make it inside to coat the tube…that it would scrape off as the pin entered. I think i would spread caulk inside the tube with a 1/4” dowel and make sure it was coated before i inserted the pin.

Too change the pendant LIFT THE BOAT and tap the pin right to left with a Flat punch. After it’s out the board will fall, be careful. Untie the rope. Remove 12 inches of core from the center of the new 5/16. Observe the old line and tie a figure 8 knot in the Braid uncored line. Tape the old line that’s hanging to the new line. Pull it up. Not cheap, but only fifty cents more than their stainless rod for a foot of 1/2".

Jerry and his crew built near 450 M15s that have the Nicopress eyes and the thru bolt at the hounds. I can't remember when I've read/heard one of these failing (I've read/seen the M15 shroud chainplates at the hull joint failing - one of the bolts because of crevice corrosion).
The lower machine swag fitting I've also done - using the same tool, meaning the tool Jerry actually used, to attach the fitting to the wire.
I've built many M15 standing rigs myself.
The work is easy and nothing complicated for an competent shop. The West Marine Rigging locations have trained staff. Same goes for smaller rigging shops.
The M15 rig is simple and strong. Folks have bent their masts after hitting trees and the shrouds survive with no obvious damage (though I would recommend replacing as they have obviously been stressed).

Not cheap, but only fifty cents more than their stainless rod for a foot of 1/2".
For the extra fifty cents, you won't have to check it in 80 years... :-)

Jerry and his crew built near 450 M15s that have the Nicopress eyes and the thru bolt at the hounds. I can't remember when I've read/heard one of these failing (I've read/seen the M15 shroud chainplates at the hull joint failing - one of the bolts because of crevice corrosion).
The lower machine swag fitting I've also done - using the same tool, meaning the tool Jerry actually used, to attach the fitting to the wire.
I've built many M15 standing rigs myself.
The work is easy and nothing complicated for an competent shop. The West Marine Rigging locations have trained staff. Same goes for smaller rigging shops.
The M15 rig is simple and strong. Folks have bent their masts after hitting trees and the shrouds survive with no obvious damage (though I would recommend replacing as they have obviously been stressed).

On my M15 the top of the shroud has a mickeymouse crimped fitting

thimble and a thru bolt in the mast. It has served me well for the 40 yr I have owned the Pelican. It seem like a similar rigging would work just as well at the bottom of the shroud only with "hardware store" cable clamps.
As I am rounding the west end of Catalina I would at least not be wondering about the workman ship and experience of the technician at West Marine.
Does anyone ever load test these? They do this with crane rigging as a requirement.

I owned an M-10 for awhile and it was titled as a Montgomery Ward. After I bought the boat I tried to have it corrected but that opened up a whole other can of worms. So I sailed my Montgomery Ward for a few years before I ended up selling her.

SEAKING is the house brand name Montgomery Ward used for their outboard motors and other boating gear back in the day. I believe the Seaking Motors were actually made by Evinrude.
Not a big deal as it is on the state DNR registration only. No titles for boats here in MN.

Paul. First. Lift the boat on a hoist. Then uncleat the rope pendant. It’s 5/16. The pin is a 3/8 shaft about 4 5/8 long that’s glued in with 5200. Too change the pendant LIFT THE BOAT and tap the pin right to left with a Flat punch. After it’s out the board will fall, be careful. Untie the rope. Remove 12 inches of core from the center of the new 5/16. Observe the old line and tie a figure 8 knot in the Braid uncored line. Tape the old line that’s hanging to the new line. Pull it up. Lift the front of the board and after caulking up the pin, tap it home. Put a 1/2 inch stick in the front of the centerboard trunk and gently lower the board until it rests on the stick. Now up top tie a knot to make sure the board never hits the centerboard trunk in front. (Without the stick) the knot prevents that. I owned an M-10 for awhile and it was titled as a Montgomery Ward. After I bought the boat I tried to have it corrected but that opened up a whole other can of worms. So I sailed my Montgomery Ward for a few years before I ended up selling her.

Paul. First. Lift the boat on a hoist. Then uncleat the rope pendant. It’s 5/16. The pin is a 3/8 shaft about 4 5/8 long that’s glued in with 5200. Too change the pendant LIFT THE BOAT and tap the pin right to left with a Flat punch. After it’s out the board will fall, be careful. Untie the rope. Remove 12 inches of core from the center of the new 5/16. Observe the old line and tie a figure 8 knot in the Braid uncored line. Tape the old line that’s hanging to the new line. Pull it up. Lift the front of the board and after caulking up the pin, tap it home. Put a 1/2 inch stick in the front of the centerboard trunk and gently lower the board until it rests on the stick. Now up top tie a knot to make sure the board never hits the centerboard trunk in front. (Without the stick) the knot prevents that. Paul. First. Lift the boat on a hoist. Then uncleat the rope pendant. It’s 5/16. The pin is a 3/8 shaft about 4 5/8 long that’s glued in with 5200. Too change the pendant LIFT THE BOAT and tap the pin right to left with a Flat punch. After it’s out the board will fall, be careful. Untie the rope. Remove 12 inches of core from the center of the new 5/16. Observe the old line and tie a figure 8 knot in the Braid uncored line. Tape the old line that’s hanging to the new line. Pull it up. Lift the front of the board and after caulking up the pin, tap it home. Put a 1/2 inch stick in the front of the centerboard trunk and gently lower the board until it rests on the stick. Now up top tie a knot to make sure the board never hits the centerboard trunk in front. (Without the stick) the knot prevents that. Squeegee more 5200 over the pin ends and lay a square of masking tape over the pin ends. It will hold until it drys and eventually fall off. Bob Sent from my iPad
