I'd like to hear what Monty owners use for a finish on their rudders. I leave my M17 on a mooring in fresh water five months a year. You can't use marine spar varnish below the water line. Clear epoxy turns cloudy and looks ugly after a few months in the sun. What do folks use? David Hill M17 Grouper
When I regularly used my stock M17 rudder (I have an IS rudder now), I finished it with several coats of spar varnish, but never kept it mounted when not sailing. Always stowed it in the cabin. So varnish worked fine for me. t On Thu, Jul 14, 2011 at 11:22 AM, <david_hill@idg.com> wrote:

Hi David, I am by no means an expert on this but I followed what Sean Mulligan (Dauntless) did as shown on this web site. Base layer of fibreglass cloth and then many coats of Epifanes varnish. I like the results with varnish and based on some information I read after the project might just use varnish if I had to do again. Below the water line the rudder already had a base of fibreglass cloth so I simply added a new layer then used anti fouling paint. So far so good. I am varnishing the tiller now. Will get a cover but the varnish is supposed to hold up well under sun. Robbin On 7/14/2011 2:22 PM, david_hill@idg.com wrote:

the rudder on my M17 is covered with epoxy and fiberglass below the waterline and then with antifouling paint. i 'dry sail' the boat ... but for for about 20 years, prior to my purchase, SWEET PEA spent 5 to 7 months a year on a buoy in quartermaster harbor (vashon island, WA). :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 - SWEET PEA :: Sailing Sage 17 #001 - AIR BORN --- On Thu, 7/14/11, david_hill@idg.com <david_hill@idg.com> wrote:
