Steve E talked about his trip at CCA V with John Edwards on Scamp. He mentioned having a second clew block on his boom to run the main reef line through. I only have one block on the left, rear of the boom for the outhaul. When I reef, I have to pull the outhaul line out of the block and feed the clew reef line through the same block. Does anyone else have the second block? Fair Winds Don Ludlow - M15 # 620 Sweet Dream Ludlowd@BEK.com
Don, For the standard outhaul on my M15 there is an eye at the very end of the boom in line with the sail track. I put a tiny double block on this eye, a single block with becket on the clew and put a cleat well forward on the boom so I can reach it with boom out. This lets me adjust the outhaul tension pretty precisely when I think of it. The block on the left side is used for the reefing line only. There is a pad eye opposite the cheek block. The reefing line runs from the pad eye, through the reefing point in the leech of the sail, back down through the cheek block and forward to a cleat. I had a second set of reef points put in the main and put a corresponding cheek block and pad eye further forward on the boom for it. I once spent 3 days sailing on Pleasant Bay on Cape Cod with a storm jib and double reefed main. Winds were never less than 20 kts and as high as 30 kts. The reefs made the sailing achievable if not pleasant. It's a good thing it is a protected piece of water or the waves would have done me in :) Thanks Doug Kelch --- "Ludlow, Don" <LudlowD@BEK.com> wrote:

Hello Don and Doug, On our 1974 M-17 there are cheek blocks P & S at the end of the boom with cleats inboard for the first and second reefing lines, easily accessible, when hove-to. I like the multiple purchase outhaul! Pulling on a single purchase is tough to adjust. Oh Boy, a place to spend money! " Really, Honey, if I fell overboard and you needed to adjust the outhaul before coming about, the multiple purchase will allow you to do that, no problem." We need to add a third small cleat to the mast so that the cunningham and first and second reef lines forward can all be rigged and ready for use. When I know that "hula pie" is properly setup for the conditions I have great confidence in this boat. Ron Goodspeed
I added a second block on my boom for reefing. The reefing line is then led forward to a cleat. Seems to work well. Tom M17 Obsessus
