Anybody have guidance/opinion regarding location of track for a small spinnaker car for the M15? Presently there's a fixed whisker pole ring on the mast, but it's weak and I thought I might as well spring for the ability to adjust the pole height as long as I'm going to replace it. Rich, Tell me I can fly a kite from an M15! Is this really feasible with a fractional rig and no backstay? Without some support high up, I would think you'd be looking at a broken mast. George: My old Capri 14.2 had the exact same rig (no back-stay. Almost identical sail areas and mast and boom dimensions) as the M15. I had a fractional rig spinnaker designed by the spinnaker shop in Palo Alto for the Capri (1986). Used the spinnaker many times, even in higher winds than I should have. Never had a problem. I use the same spinnaker on the M15 and it works better because the M15 tracks so well downwind. I sail singlehanded with the M15 when flying the spinnaker (never singlehanded with the Capri.) The fractional rig without a back-stay is very stable, in my opinion. Another great benefit of a small sailboat with only 140 sf gennaker and spinnaker is you can douse them in seconds if things aren't going right. It's easy to cut 1/8" halyards and sheets, if need be and cheap to replace. It's the excitement that counts!! The M15 gives you big boat thrills at small boat prices, and it fits in a garage alot easier than the 17. No backstay or spreaders to contend with when rigging. Jerry Montgomery is my hero. George, Check the MSOG site and you will find some pics of my Storm Petrel, with tanbark sails, flying her asynch spinnaker. Check Lake Erie II under Trip Stuff. There is a small pic on the home page, too. The asynch isn't the same as a regular kite, but probably about the same size. It's my version of a genoa! Tom- just center a new piece of track on the location of the old ring. 18" should be more than enough. But if that's the ring I put on when you brought the boat out for the race, it's strong enough.
